Hi! We are Charlie Landefeld and Lukas Garcia, high school debaters. We hope to pursue our debating dreams on the national circuit by going to the 2016 Tournament of Champions taking place in Kentucky--and we need your help! The Tournament of Champions is the most prestigious debate tournament in the world and we are excited to represent our region on such a scale. No team from the Columbia Basin has ever had the opportunity to compete at the Tournament of Champions, and we aim to do our best in representing our region.
To give a little bit of background on our passion, we have spent a significant portion of our high school careers at debate tournaments throughout the state. The commitment that we both have to debate is also seen through the amount of time we invest into preparing for competition, and helping our novice teammates succeed. Overall, a great portion of our lives has gone into debate and taking advantage of this unique debate opportunity is something that means the world to us.
Although Washington is a wonderful place with excellent competition, our team has taken advantage of opportunities to travel out of state in order to hone our skills on the national circuit. Last year, we travelled to the San Francisco Bay Area in order to compete alongside some of the best debaters in the nation at the 2015 James Logan MLK Memorial Tournament! After 5 rounds, we were placed third out of 144 entries, proving that we can compete at the national level.
The Tournament of Champions, taking place April 30-May 2, is our opportunity to compete with the best debaters in the nation. After training this summer and performing well at local tournaments, we feel that capitalizing on this opportunity at our peak is a great way to end our high school debate careers. This pursuit, however, can only be made possible by the removal of financial barriers that are standing in our way. With your generosity, we hope to relieve the financial stress that may keep us from competing at the end of April.
On a personal level, any aid that you or your family can offer would mean everything to us. Small donations go a long way, and every penny that goes towards this fundraiser brings us another step closer to Kentucky.
