Our dear, dear ShinBi may have not been rescued from a Korean dog market, but he was certainly rescued from a Korean animal shelter and his health problems that we soon realized may have been to bewildering for his original owner.

ShinBi has diabetes.  We have a monthly bill of $300-$500  to cover his meds. Because of his diabetes, ShinBi now needs eye surgery.

Dogs might not read, but cataracts can cause intraocular inflammation and eventually causes painful glaucoma. Glaucoma causes chronic headaches similar to migraines.

About 75 percent of diabetic dogs develop cataracts (cloudy lenses) and blindness in both eyes within nine months of being diagnoses with diabetes and this is much the case with ShinBi.

We waited until ShinBi was healthy enough for surgery. If we waited much longer, cataracts could cause a painful intraocular inflammation and both eyes would need to be removed.

ShinBi is having his surgery on 11 May 2015 at the Tustin Eye Care Center ( 3025 Edinger Ave, Tustin, CA 92780).  The estimated cost is $3000. His foster mom, Sue Baldwin, the current president of Southland Collie Rescue is putting the bill on her credit card for now.

We need to ask for your help again.  The reality is we need much more than this for ShinBi's care as you'll see from the medical expenses listed below.

Please share and share again. We also plan on having fundraisers at on the last Wednesdays of May and July at the Irvine Ruby's Diner, so come and eat--we get 20 percent of the non-alcoholic sales.

We also plan on having a garage sale. Have items to donate, please contact us ASAP. Have a place where we can hold a garage sale? Let us know.

Yesterday evening, as I was on my way out, something amazing happened. The generous Jenny Costa Farrell helped us reach our goal! Farrell isn't even in SoCal, but is based in Texas. We hope to meet her when she comes to SoCal in July to thank her.

ShinBi's surgery costs have been covered. That's a relief for all ShinBi fans and for his foster mom, Sue Baldwin.

So let's all get ready to meet and talk collies this Wednesday (lunch/dinner) at the Irvine Ruby's Diner. Everyone has to eat!

From Sue Baldwin: "Today was the big day for Shin. He had successful cataract surgery in both eyes. Dr. Esson was really pleased with how well he did under anesthesia and how good his new lenses fit. He goes back tomorrow for a recheck, mainly for the pressure in his eyes. He is still on drops 4 times a day and some of the usual pain and anti-inflammatory meds. He is pretty pooped but he ate a good dinner and got his insulin and now will be sleeping it off for the night. Our bill was about $3400 which covers follow up visits too.

Dr. Esson said to give his eyes about 2 weeks before judging his amount of sight. Some of the drugs they used on him made his pupils really small so I didn't see any change in him today. Poor Shin has to wear the cone, no other types of collars like our Soft-E. It is imperative that it stays on 24/7 for several days. Poor guy is having a hard time with this besides everything else."

Southland Collie Rescue are heroes of mine. My mother fostered Collies for them for many many years. They do everything for the dogs in their care. They have spent more than $12,000 on veterinary spare for ShinBi since they rescued him from South Korea. He has received the best of care. Please consider donating whatever amount you can afford. We had two Collies, Channing and Raleigh, these dogs are very special to me.
