October 12, 2016, felt like an ordinary day. I began my day working, and then headed to law school for a few meetings. While at school, I received a phone call from my doctor informing me that I have breast cancer. I called my fiancé, Brian, and told him the news. Of course, he said that I should come home. I, however, stayed and finished my meetings. I was in complete shock in that moment, but I decided I was not going to give in to my diagnosis and I was going to continue to live my life.
My doctor estimates that my cancer is in stage 1 or 2; thus it will require several months of rigorous treatment including at least 5 months of chemotherapy. Due to the presence of multiple cancerous tumors in one of my breasts, my doctors have recommended a single mastectomy with reconstruction.
During the next few months, my life will change dramatically. Chemo will cause me to be fatigued and to lose my hair. Chemo will also force me to substantially reduce my school credits, miss time from work, and maybe postpone my July wedding.
What can you do? How can you help?
We are asking your help to cover some of the costs that we are encountering.
Brian and I know that I am going to be healthy again, so we are looking to secure our future & our family. We have decided to freeze my eggs, because chemotherapy can have a negative impact on fertility and damage ability to produce eggs. Unfortunately, fertility treatment is not covered by insurance.
We have encountered several expenses since the diagnosis with several more expenses to come in the future; the first of those is the cost of the fertility treatment. The actual procedure to harvest eggs costs about $4,000 and $3,000 - $5,000 for fertility drugs. The eggs are then frozen and cost $425 a year to store.
We anticipate additional expenses of $5,000, including the cost of copayments, prescription medications, specialty wigs, and necessary surgeries including a mastectomy with breast reconstruction. Your donation will help offset the cost of my cancer treatment, which will allow me to continue to afford law school and continue to plan my wedding. We have set a $10,000 goal for this fundraising effort.
