Sarah's Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected
Please help us support Sarah and her family during this challenging time.

On October 2nd Sarah was taken to the hospital after a long stretch of back pain. Thinking that it was from her pregnancy, Sarah and her fiance Mark had no idea what they were about to encounter.

After some time in the hospital, a tumor was found on Sarah's spine. Along with this tumor multiple lesions were found on her neck and shoulders. When these were found, Sarah was diagnosed with an incurable form of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma and transferred to Jefferson University Hospital to be overseen by cancer specialists.

At the time of the diagnosis Sarah was 7 months pregnant. Concerned about the growth and health of Mark and Sarah's growing baby, doctors could not start chemotherapy or any treatment to fight the cancer. For two weeks, Sarah stayed strong and fought through the pain in order to give her growing baby more time to develop.

They waited as long as they could and ultimately decided to do a c-section in order to start Sarah's radiation therapy and shrink the tumor on her spine.

Little Dominic was born

On Oct 16th 2015, little Dominic was born at 2:38pm. Although 7 weeks premature, he weighed a relatively healthy 6lbs 6oz and was 18''.

Dominic spent a few weeks in an incubator and was able to hang out with his parents when they came to visit him in the Intensive Care Nursery every day.

Everyone is still unsure whether he will turn out to be a Flyers or Penguins fan, but his father is looking forward to taking him to his first hockey game when he’s old enough!

Just like his mother, Dominic stayed strong and they were both discharged on Nov 5th.

Chemo and Radiation

On the day that she was going to start her chemotherapy doctors ordered an emergency spinal surgery. The cancer was causing spinal cord compression leaving her without control of her main bodily functions.

After a few days of healing from the spinal surgery, they were able to start the chemotherapy and she was discharged. She was only home for two days when her blood pressure dropped and she had to go back to the ER. Discovering that she was septic the doctors started her on antibiotics.

She was discharged after a week and was only home for one and a half days before being rushed back to the hospital. Currently back at Jefferson Hospital, they are running tests to determine what is causing her low blood pressure. Until they do they are not able to continue with chemotherapy.

Sarah, Mark and Dominic have been staying positive throughout this whole ordeal because of the love and support of their friends and family, but unfortunately, this is not enough. The medical bills continue to pile up and they need your support.

Please donate any amount that you can and help us support this young family.

About Multiple Myeloma

The plasma cells are a type of white blood cell in the bone marrow. With this condition, a group of plasma cells becomes cancerous and multiplies. The disease can damage the bones, immune system, kidneys, and red blood cell count.

Symptoms may not be present or may be non-specific, such as loss of appetite, bone pain, and fever.

Treatments include medications, chemotherapy, corticosteroids, radiation, or a stem-cell transplant.
