About The Project:

THE STORY CIRCUS PROJECT creates a unique educational program by combining Vera Goodman's decades worth of experience and research in literacy and learning, with Green Fools' extensive work inspiring youth through circus arts.

THE STORY CIRCUS PROJECT will engage youth at Chief Jacob Bearspaw School in Eden Valley from September 19th to October 7th, 2016.  Green Fools and Chief Jacob Bearspaw School have built a long-term relationship through circus camps and workshops.

The project intends to expand and reach more youth and communities as we grow.

* Any donation you make before SEPTEMBER 4th, 2016, will be MATCHED 50% by Shaw Birdies for Kids for the first $20,000!

How It Works:

Green Fools' Social Circus team of professional artist instructors, work with community youth during the second week of the three week program.  Participants explore stilt walking, tight rope walking, acrobatics and clowning, and culminate the week with a performance.

The weeks before, during and after the circus activities, Vera Goodman and her assistants, engage The Story Circle Model of Education to work with students on literacy and academic subjects using circus themes.

The combination of physical education, team work, and confidence building, provided by the Social Circus component, establishes a foundation for reflection and expression when merged with the Story Circle Model.

This thorough and thoughtful educational opportunity, aims to provide youth with an alternative way to gain self-confidence, to work together, to be inspired and to become competent readers, writers, and learners.

A little background:

THE STORY CIRCLE MODEL OF EDUCATION

The Story Circle Model is focused on developing reading, writing and speaking skills, to ensure that students go out into the world able to communicate well.  These skills are the ones needed to master academic tasks in all subject areas.  The model creates an environment that respects, and builds on, individual strengths. It is based in experiences created through a story shared orally.  This inspires a diversity of learning opportunities that arise from the themes of the story.   As children and adolescents have their gifts and strengths identified and expanded, they develop a confidence that enables them to become happy, competent learners.

SOCIAL CIRCUS

Social Circus is a growing global movement that uses circus arts, as a medium to enrich the lives and personal development of marginalized youth, who may face social or personal risk.  It is a dynamic alternative approach to achievement through the arts and has displayed remarkable results in altering the lives of vulnerable young people worldwide.  This arts based program is more than just a circus.  The carefully planned activities have long term benefits for these youth, building their confidence and sense of belonging and teaching them to work as a team with other youth.  Those skills will help them in their everyday interactions with other kids all through the year.  Green Fools Theatre is Western Canada's leader is Social Circus.

A personal story:

Baseer is an 8 year-old who is new to Canada.  He and his family are from Afghanistan and were forced to flee the Taliban, so for two years they were living in very poor conditions in a safe house in Pakistan.  They arrived in Calgary in June 2013 and just a few days after their arrival they were hit by the devastating floods of that summer and lost their home.  Not only did they have to deal with the depression and hardships of being refugees, they tasted loss and displacement of the flood when they arrived in Calgary.

When Baseer and his brother were chosen to be part of the Green Fools Social Circus Program they were a bit apprehensive as they did not speak English.  However, the Social Circus Program welcomed Baseer and his brother and provided an inclusive, supporting and inspiring week.  After seeing the instructors perform circus tricks and then having their thrilling experiences with stilt walking, juggling, unicycle and trapeze and having fun with other kids, their fears were gone and they were hooked!  When Baseer’s dad saw the children’s final performance at the end of the week, he said: “My children learned so much from the camp:  motivation, self esteem, courage and self confidence. They were so happy at the camp you cannot imagine!”
