Women make up half of the total U.S. college-educated workforce, but only 29% of the science and engineering workforce.
Please consider contributing to the Nahrain Kamber Endowed Student Research Fellowship. The endowment is dedicated to helping women majoring in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects to conduct research.
“I intend to connect with the students as much as I can,” says Kamber. “Researching over the summer in undergrad was central in my decision to go to grad school. My summer internships helped shape my career. Likewise, I want to be a resource to women especially in the science majors and the recipients of this endowment beyond the monetary gift because I can give career guidance as they navigate through STEM careers where women tend to be underrepresented.”
Kamber is an Assyrian originally from Baghdad, Iraq, and came to the USA with her parents in 1985 to live in Manhattan, KS. When she was in elementary school, her father, a professor of physics, took a job a Western Michigan University and moved the family to Kalamazoo. Kamber graduated from Kalamazoo Central and was a full ride recipient of the F. W. and Elsie L. Heyl Science Scholarship Fund at Kalamazoo College. Kamber then completed her PhD in chemistry at Stanford University.
Kamber then started her career as a senior scientist within the polymer synthesis and modification group within Core Research at the Dow Chemical Company in 2007, one week after submitting her dissertation. In the US, only 35.2% of chemists are women.
In order to set up the endowment, Griffith needs to raise at least $50,000. He gave $20,000 of his own money with an opportunity to provide other matching funds. He has been fundraising from family and friends and private donors for the other $30,000.
