SouthShore All Abilities Playground

Swings, slides and monkey bars are an intricate part of childhood. Going to the playground is part of growing up. What happens when a child is unable to navigate a playground or parents/grandparents are unable to manage the terrain? Instances where curbs or mulch surround the play structures inhibit walkers and wheelchairs from accessing the area. Playgrounds may be built near freeways or train tracks causing sensory issues. These types of obstacles can turn a fun outing into a disappointment for the child or adult with disabilities. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2008 - 2012 American Community Survey, 116,663 (12.4%) of Milwaukee County residents have a disability, and 12,538 (5.3%) of Milwaukee County children under 18 have a disability. While it is true that we are blessed with numerous parks in Milwaukee County, there are none that are considered All Abilities accessible. Some may be boasted as all abilities friendly, but that is not exactly the same. An All Abilities Playground offers many additional features to aid wheelchairs and walkers, accommodate sensitivity issues, and reduce safety concerns than the current parks. They are completely fenced-in and have modified equipment such as ramps, poured rubber foundations, backed swings, and more. The South Shore All Abilities Playground will bring this type of playground to the City of St. Francis and Milwaukee County! It would be the first of its type in the county, and include a Zipline and wheelchair swing. This type of destination would bring families from all over Southeastern Wisconsin and increase day tourism. Beyond the fiscal benefits, it would create a draw for new families and build a stronger sense of community. The cost for this type of structure is approximately $400,000 and will be completely fundraised through public and private donations, in addition to grants.
