SBS - From Art Cart to Art Room!

The Side By Side Charter School was established in 1997 to promote social justice and equitable education for all students in a racially diverse and socio-economically integrated setting. Since first opening our doors, we have provided Pre-K through Grade 8 students with a uniquely experiential and interdisciplinary curriculum on a shoestring budget, as charter schools in Connecticut, though public schools, are funded at far lower per pupil rates than non-charter public schools.
But even with a very, very tight budget, we have found ways to provide our largely inner- city students with unique opportunities to experience a rich education, particularly in relation to social studies, the arts and the sciences. We have recently become the top-achieving charter school in the state of Connecticut, and were awarded the 2016 National Association of Professional Development Schools top recognition as an Exemplary Professional Development School based on our partnership with the Quinnipiac University School of Education.
This year, we have begun a building project to replace our upper school annex; a portable classroom building that provides classrooms for our grades 6-8. This building is years past its original lifespan, and is in disrepair. Our goal is to provide not only safe and sound classrooms, but to house in this new building a well-equipped ART room. Currently, our Art teacher provides art lessons to our younger students from a cart she rolls from room to room. For older students, we use the basement of an adjacent church building to provide art classes.
Please help us provide a well-lit, open and well-supplied space for our students to experience the arts. Your donation will be used to directly fund materials, furnishings and other unique possibilities such looms or kilns that would enhance our art offerings to our students.
