In March of 2016 St. Bernadette Parish welcomed the Appleton senior community and opened its doors and hearts to the new Thompson Center on Lourdes. What began as a temporary solution has turned into a permanent home for those celebrating life after 50. This was the second repurposing of our buildings as back in January 2015 we began a partnership with NAMI and became the first State of WI Peer Run Respite Center.
St. Bernadette parishioners have given of their time, treasure and talent to make, the St. Bernadette Center (SBC), a reality. In November 2017 we completed Stage 1 of the transformation of SBC. This included the installation of a new fire alarm system, enhanced emergency lights for the entire school building, installation of fire walls and two areas of refuge to bring our school up to code. This was able to come to fruition due to the generosity of our parishioners who donated $118,072 as well as an Appleton Community Economic Development Neighborhood grant totaling $60,000.
In addition to the Thompson Center on Lourdes, SBC also is home to several other organizations including Easter Seals, Options for Independent Living, Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Kids on the Move, Active Minds, Spiritus, Fox Valley Bible Study, and Appleton Historical Society. A new tenant in the works is Happy Feet.
We are now onto Stage 2 which is to install a new ventilation system, which includes heat and air conditioning for the Thompson Center at Lourdes which makes its home at the St. Bernadette Center. This is why we are inviting you, a committed community partner, to assist us in serving the seniors of Appleton and the numerous organizations serving our community.
The cost of Stage 2 is estimated at $342,073. We have secured an additional $30,000 development grant from the City of Appleton. More importantly, we have received a matching grant of $150,000 from Mary Beth Nienhaus for this project. In order to complete this project on time and have proper heating and air conditioning we need to raise the money by March 19th, 2018. We are asking that you be a part of the future for the seniors in our area.
