Karla's Education Expenses

Donation protected
The Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise in Cornwall Ontario Canada is raising funds for the education of one of our former Rotary exchange students from Venezuela. Karla was our Rotary exchange student from Venezuela in 2015. After a year as a grade 12 student at CCVS High School in Cornwall Ontario she returned to Venezuela to pursue post-secondary education there. Due to the crisis in Venezuela, Karla has been unable to continue her post-secondary education there. She applied and has been accepted in the 2 year Social Service Worker program at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall Ontario. These funds are being raised to support her first year of study as an international student in Canada. Once she is in Canada with a Student VISA she will be able to work part time during the school year and full time in the summer to help provide for year 2  of her studies. Below I have provided some of the reasons why she is no longer able to pursue her studies at home. $15,300 tuition /year $400-800 / year Average Expenses for Books Her room and board is being covered by a wonderful individual who is opening their home. Venezuela's economic crisis keeps getting worse. Venezuela's slow-burning economic collapse is quickly becoming a regional humanitarian crisis as Venezuelans flee in ever larger numbers, looking for refuge in neighboring and nearby countries. More than 600,000 Venezuelans have already fled their country and sought asylum in Colombia. There is a high number of students dropping out of universities around the country. The economic crisis and the policies of the Venezuelan government have forced both university students and professors to either search for jobs elsewhere or simply leave the country. The dramatic fall in the real wages of faculty has forced an estimated 1,600 professors to leave the five main public universities resulting in a  desertion rate close to 70 percent. The rectors of UNIMET and UCAB, claims that the Venezuelan State “has deliberately manipulated norms, policies and practices in order to suppress academic freedom and university autonomy. Protests and violence put students at risk. After weeks of violent protests, an 18-year-old student in El Sistema's national orchestra was killed at a rally in Caracas at the beginning of May. The Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise will be withdrawing the donations from GoFundMe into the Club's bank account and paying Karla's tuition, Student VISA and other related costs directly.
