Roane's Medical Fund

Donation protected

On August 25, 2016, we began living Erin's personal nightmare: our older son, Roane (5 years old), was diagnosed with cancer. Specifically, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

(Kaylo + Roane)

No matter what, this kind of news is devastating for any parent.  But for Andrew and I, it had a special kind of heartbreak attached to it.  You see, I am a survivor of childhood A.L.L., as well.  And according to specialists, this kind of thing has *never* happened before.  The chances of our child developing the same kind of cancer as did in my teens is one in millions...

Besides the obvious tragedy of our soft-spoken, sensitive child being diagnosed with cancer and facing 3 years (!) of treatment, this news has come after an already medically intensive and very trying year. This last winter/spring, I had three extensive and cutting edge reconstructive surgeries on my right ankle and foot.  These surgeries are a direct result of the long term side effects (known as late effects) that were caused by my own chemotherapy 20 years ago.  Because of those surgeries (and the resulting 4 months of bedrest and continuing physio as I relearn to walk/run/etc with my re-newed ankle joint), my husband, Andrew, has already used up his paid leave this year.

Because of this, we do not have the means to support ourselves and the additional costs being incurred as a result of the  lengthy treatment that Roane now faces.  Andrew will need to cut down his hours or take leave from work, as we continue to balance the needs of our little family.  Roane and I will be in and out of Vancouver constantly; sometimes staying in the hospital, sometimes staying there as an outpatient.  Kaylo, Roane's little brother, will need someone to care for him, at least part-time, as we care for Roane's medical needs.

We are looking to raise funds in order to cover the costs associated with: staying in Vancouver, travel costs, extra child care, food and unexpected medical expenses.  We will also be donating a portion of the money raised back into BC Childrens' Hospital and Childhood Cancer Canada.

While the treatment has just started, news continues to come in on a regular basis about treatment schedules, new medical needs, and, of course, how Roane continues to respond to his chemotherapy.

Your help would be greatly appreciated! Stay tuned - we will keep the updates and pictures coming. Many thanks for your support!
