PETAASE- Rise through Education!

In diesem Falle liegt es an Uns rund 200 Kindern die Chance zu geben, ihr Potenzial ausleben zu können. 

Ich möchte mich erstmal vorstellen: mein Name ist Gabriella Papanikolaou und ich bin 23 Jahre jung und Medizinstudentin. 
Ich habe 7,5 Monate in Ghana gelebt und ehrenamtlich gearbeitet.
Zu meinen Arbeitsalltag gehörten neben dem Krankenhaus auch sogenannte ‚‚Medical Outreachs‘‘. Wir sind in einer Gruppe von 5-6 Leuten in die Dörfer außerhalb der Stadt gefahren um dort die Dorfbewohner und Kinder medizinisch zu versorgen. 



Ein kleines Dorf hat es mir sehr angetan: PETAASE.
Die Dorfbewohner waren besonders für mich. Sie besitzen fast nichts, aber haben eine unfassbare Gastfreundschaft, welche ich so noch nie erlebt habe. Sie sind unglaublich wissbegierig und versuchen die Hygiene und Bildung in ihrem Dorf zu verbessern, um ihren Kindern ein gesünderes und besseres Leben bieten zu können. 

Dazu möchte ich euch nun eine kleine Geschichte erzählen: 

Ich traf eine bemerkenswerte Frau/Mutter, Maame Abena Boahemaa. Sie hat vier Kinder, die sie alleine großzieht. Als ich einen Gesundheits-Check-up bei ihr durchführte kamen wir ins Gespräch. Sie dankte mir immer wieder für unsere Arbeit hier und für alles was wir ihnen erklären und woraus sie lernen können. Ich kann dieses Gefühl nicht beschreiben, aber es war als ob ich mit einer langjährigen Freundin sprach und es war einfach eine einzigartige Verbindung zwischen uns. 
Ich habe ihr versucht zu erklären, dass es ein Geben und Nehmen ist. Ihr Land und die Community geben mir so viel, was unbezahlbar ist und ich mich freue wenn ich ein wenig helfen kann. 

Auf einmal wurde sie sehr still und sagte nur: ‚‚ich wünschte jemand würde uns sehen. Uns wirklich sehen und uns helfen. Unsere Kinder haben keine Chance aus diesem Dorf zu entkommen, die Welt zu erkunden und zu verstehen.‘‘ Sie fühlt sich so hilflos und versucht so gut es geht ihren Kindern alles beizubringen was sie weiß, jedoch ist auch sie mit vielen Wissenslücken aufgewachsen. Ein Computer? was ist das? Wie soll Sie Ihnen Dinge erklären, die sie selbst nicht versteht. 
Sie muss jeden Tag ansehen wie das Unwissen eine immer weitere Lücke zwischen ihnen und der restlichen Welt zieht. ‚‚Wenn es so weitergeht, sagt Sie mir, verlieren vollkommen den Anschluss und was wird dann aus uns?‘‘

Dieses Gespräch war wie ein Schlag in meine Magengrube. Mir war bewusst hier muss etwas passieren, eine Veränderung und ich fühle mich in der Verantwortung für diese Leute zu sprechen. Wir müssen diesen Kreis durchbrechen, in dem die letzten drei Generationen dieses Dorf stecken.

Es gab keine richtigen Lehrer in der Gegend, jedoch war es mir möglich einen Lehrer zu finden der bereit ist mein Projekt zu unterstützen und 4-5x die Woche in das Dorf zu fahren um dort zu unterrichten.

Leider muss das komplette Schulgebäude restauriert werden, da es sonst unmöglich ist Kinder richtig zu unterrichten und das vor allem in der Regenzeit. 
Wir wollen ein geschlossenes Gebäude errichten mit richtigen Sitzreihen und Holztischen. Die zwei Klassenzimmer bleiben bestehen, dennoch muss die Schule komplett neu verkleidet werden und ein neues Dach muss auch her. Außerdem versuche ich auch ein paar Bücherregale zu kaufen und diese mit Büchern für die Kinder zu füllen.








Ich machte mich danach schlau, warum der Staat diese Dörfer nicht besser unterstützt, aber das ist wohl einer der großen Schattenseiten Afrikas - die Korruption! Selbst wenn der Staat bereit wäre dieses Dorf zu fördern, würde das Geld nie ankommen. 

Ich möchte also alles tun was in meiner Macht steht, um diese Schule neu aufzubauen und den Kindern die Möglichkeiten zu bieten, die sie verdienen. 
Ich werde in regelmäßig nach Ghana zurückkehren und alle Vorgänge überwachen. 
Ich werde versuchen noch eine zweite Lehrkraft zu finden und diese falls nötig mit Hilfe einer Freundin/deutschen Lehrerin weiterzubilden und die Lernmethoden zu verbessern.


Eine gute Freundin aus Deutschland, welche seit einem Jahr in Ghana lebt, ist eine große Unterstützung für mein Projekt, da sie bereit ist auch die Kinder in Ihrer Freizeit ehrenamtlich zu unterrichten. 

Wenn ihr euch dazu entschieden habt etwas zu spenden möchte ich euch das Gefühl vermitteln ein Teil dieses Projekts zu sein und werde euch regelmäßig E-Mails zukommen lassen mit allen Neuigkeiten und Fortschritten der Schule.

Wie ein weises Sprichwort sagt: »Wer will, findet Wege, wer nicht will, findet Ausreden.«

In this case, it is up to us to give around 200 children the chance to live out their potential.

I would like to introduce myself first; My name is Gabriella Papanikolaou and I'm proud 23 years young and a medical student.
I lived in Ghana for 4.5 months and worked as a volunteer.
My daily routine next to the hospital also included; Medical Outreachs. We drove in a group of 5-6 people to the villages outside the city to provide medical care for the villagers and children.

One of the villages became very special to me, PETAASE.

What really amazed me about the people there was that despite the fact that they didn't have access to many things we take for granted they offered us a level of hospitality i never experienced before.Despite all their hardships they work everyday to improve their living conditions so they'll be able to provide their children with better education and health standards.
To help you understand all these let me tell you a little story: 

One day i met a remarkable woman Maame Abena Boahemaa she was a proud mother of 4 children which she had to raise alone.As i was doing a health check up on her we started talking.She thanked me many times for our work here and for all the things we teach them.There is no way for me to describe the feeling but it was like i was talking to an old friend someone i knew for years. I tried to explain to her that the help we provided them was nothing compared to what we took from all of this.The people we met and the experiences we took are priceless so the help we gave them is never going to be enough for what they have taught me.

Suddenly she became very quiet and said "i wish someone could see us and really help us because our children have no chance to escape from this village,to explore and understand the world".She tried so hard to teach her children everything she knows but there are so many things she doesn't know,so many things noone taught her so she has to watch as every day ignorance creates a ever widening gap between her and the rest of the world.If this goes on,if noone helps, the people there will lose their connection with the rest of the world,and their hopes and dreams will never get the chance to come to fruition and will just be echoes that get weaker and weaker as we turn a blind eye and don't do anything.Should we just let this happen?I think that is a question we all should ask ourselves.Shouldn't we help these people get the same oportunities we have?


For me this conversation was like a punch in my stomach. I knew something had to happen here, a change,so i felt the responsibility to be their voice. We have to break this cycle in which the last 3 generations put this village.

There were no real teachers in the area, but I was able to find a teacher willing to support my project and drive to the village 4-5 times a week to teach them.

Unfortunately, the entire school building must be restored, because otherwise it is impossible to properly teach children there, especially in the rainy season.
We want to build a proper building with two classrooms, with rows of chairs and wooden tables. I also try to buy some bookshelves and fill them with books for the kids.

After some time I was trying to  figure out if the state could provide support for these villages , but i understood the even if the state wanted to provide support the money would never reach the village and the reason for that is that the biggest problem in the country is Corruption.

So I want to do everything in my power to rebuild this school and give the children the opportunities they deserve.
I will return to Ghana regularly and monitor all events.
I will try to find a second teacher and if necessary with the help of a friend / German teacher we'll try to  improve the teaching methods.


A good friend and great supporter of the project from Germany who's living in Ghana for 1 year  is ready to teach the children in her free time until we improve the teacher's skills.
