Right now, live permanently disabled educational raptors need YOUR help to protect them from the deadly Avian Influenza Virus.

New, safe enclosures and upgrades in biosecurity for their well-being is critical.

Your funding can make this happen!

Here are the details:

A new strain of Avian Influenza arrived in North America via migrating waterfowl in late 2014, and has quickly spread along migratory bird corridors of the Pacific, Central, and Mississippi flyways.  It is spread by waterfowl, which don’t get sick from the virus.  Most infections have occurred in U.S. domestic poultry, which exhibit 100% mortality.  It is also considered to be fatal to raptors.  Updates as of spring 2017 shows this strain to still be present and viable throughout the United States flyways.

Several of the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program Educational Raptors have been housed for decades at the Environmental Learning Center (ELC), a beautiful nature center along the Poudre River.  While the ELC is an ideal location for viewing raptors,  to better protect our education birds, the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program has relocated the raptors that normally live at the ELC to our main facility.

We typically housed 8 birds at the ELC:  3 golden eagles, a bald eagle, 3 red-tailed hawks, and a Swainson’s hawk. To accommodate these birds, we renovated our enclosures to make room.  We enhanced our biosecurity of the facility, adding measures such as footbaths and gravel pathways that help prevent the spread of disease by footgear.

But all of this costed money and continues to cost money to maintain:  $16,000.  And we need your continued support to help pay for materials such as perching supplies, and disinfectant so we can keep our birds safe.

Please donate today – every gift, no matter the size, will help save lives!!!

We have finished the enclosure update which this GoFundMe campaign was created for. However, we are still in ever continual need for funds to maintain bird perching fixtures, general repairs and biosecurity. We appreciate all funds donated to the RMRP and we use your support money wisely.

The enclosures have been finished and the birds are housed within them. The birds are doing well and are healthy. But we still are in need of funds to purchase gravel. The gravel is very important for us to be able to add a level of biosecurity around the enclosures. The gravel is able to be cleaned and disinfected. Where as if we have just dirt, that is not able to be cleaned and disinfected. This allows us to add more of a protective buffer around the birds and increases our ability to keep them safe. Please consider helping fund this important need.

Thank you to all that have been contributing to the effort to improve our enclosures and to strengthen our bio-security in order to protect our birds from exposure to Avian Influenza.

More is still needed. One of these barrels of disinfectant costs $1000. We use this in foot baths so that we don't track the virus in on our shoes. We must disinfect everything that travels to programs and exhibits when it comes back home. Then of course general cleaning. This is not your average disinfectant. It is specially designed to kill viruses so it isn't cheap.

Please consider helping us to defray the cost of this most critical of needs.
