Puerto Rico Goes Dark: Stories of My People
Greetings,
I'm Jackelyn Segui, original from Moca, Puerto Rico. Since I was little, I have been an enthusiast of the arts & that is what I have dedicated my life too. In September 2017, I started my graduate studies in Performing Arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. In the course of the atmospheric phenomenon María, it was very difficult for me to be far away from my island & family, without being able to be of greater help.
After the hurricane, many lost their homes, belongings, livestock, went hungry, & even came across death. In my humble position as an artist, I have to collect the less-well-known stories &/or highlight those that were pillars of communication & the advocates of the community voice. I feel it is my duty to document them & bring them to those who know little of our history, culture, & human quality. So I decided to join these stories & with them create a theatrical piece for my Master's Thesis, taking their stories to the ears of Americans.
My theater piece is completely based on interviews, news reports, audios, & ongoing research on the subject. I've called it "Puerto Rico Goes Dark: Stories of My People". It will take place on February 14, 15 and 16 at the Mondararo Theater in Savannah, GA.
Your donation will be used to pay for staging, scenery, costumes, instrumentation, marketing, etc. The remaining amount will be donated to a charity of our choice in Puerto Rico.

Soy Jackelyn Segui, original de Moca, Puerto Rico. Desde pequeña he sido entusiasta de las artes y a eso he dedicado mi vida. En Septiembre 2017 comencé mis estudios graduados en Artes Escénicas en Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Savannah, Georgia. En el transcurso del fenómeno atmosférico María me fue muy difícil estar lejos de mi isla y familia, sin poder ser de mayor ayuda.
Tras el huracán, muchos perdieron sus casa, pertenencias, ganado, pasaron hambre, e incluso hasta se toparon con la muerte. En mi humilde posición de artista me queda recolectar las historias no tan conocidas y/o resaltar aquellas que fueron pilares de comunicación, ayuda y voz de comunidad. Siento es mi deber documentarlas y traerlas a los que poco conocen de nuestra historia, cultura, y calidad humana. Por lo que he decidido unir estas historias y con ellas crear una pieza teatral con motivo a mi Tesis de Maestría, llevando sus historias a los oídos de los estadounidenses.
Mi pieza teatral es completamente basada en entrevistas, reportes noticiosos, audios, y la investigación continua sobre el tema. La he llamado "Puerto Rico Goes Dark: Stories of My People". La misma se llevara a cabo en Febrero 14, 15 y 16 en el teatro Mondararo en Savannah, GA.
Su donación servirá para costear elementos de escena, vestuario, instrumentación, mercadeo, etc. El monto restante sera donado a una entidad benéfica de nuestra elección en Puerto Rico.
