Project GIRL is an initiative - run by college sophomores Kelsey Glancy and Jenna Brignola - aimed towards helping girls in the Volta Region of Ghana stay in school and reach their full potential as educated women. This is our third year running Project Girl, and since it's inception, we have been collecting feminine products and shipping them to the schools in the Volta Region of Ghana. Girls often have to stay home from school during menstruation because they lack access to feminine hygiene products, so with these products, the girls are able to go to school full time.
Recently, Project GIRL has collaborated with ROC Inc. in an effort to create new and more sustainable programs within our project. The new changes within Project GIRL include reusable sanitary pads created by Days for Girls, compost toilets constructed by Dream Big Ghana, and new educational and health programs. All donations will go directly towards these efforts.

Girls in Ghana have a difficult time getting an education. This is not due to a lack of access to education—but rather to a lack of access to personal sanitary items.
When Ghanaian girls reach a certain age and begin to menstruate, many do not have the sanitary products necessary to properly care for themselves. Because of this, girls tend to stay home from school, which leads to high rates of drop-outs. Without an education, marriage is often the only option for a livelihood, and it is usually with a much older man. In essence, girls in Ghana end up living really difficult lives that lack autonomy.
Providing these girls with sanitary items can improve their access to education by allowing them to stay in school during menstruation. Collecting sanitary items - such as pads and underwear through drives at all-girl schools, sororities, and other generous donors - then shipping the products to the girls can help these students better their lives. This is exactly what Project GIRL set out to do. Offering a girl a package of pads and new underwear is such a simple act to help solve a complicated problem.
After collecting materials, Project GIRL ships them to Ghana where an NGO, Village Exchange Ghana, receives and distributes them to various schools in the Volta Region. Project GIRL also gives money to Village Exchange Ghana so that they can give educational programs and materials to the girls. These programs include a practical demonstration of the use of pads, debunking myths associated with menstruation, and other pertinent information on sexual and reproductive health.
In its first year, Project GIRL’s donations led to a 10% improvement in school attendance! Furthermore, of the girls who received pads, 24.2% did not know of pads before Project GIRL, 32.5% used pads for the first time, and 12.5% used money for food, instead of skipping meals to save money to by pads.
Providing these girls with sanitary items not only helps advance their education, but it also encourages the girls to think of other ways to better their lives.
