PORTRAITS OF FORGOTTEN WOMEN

Donation protected
VISION:

Adrienne La Faye, is an artist, an author, and a community social justice art educator who travels to prisons across the United States chronicling the female African American diaspora through her "Portraits of Forgotten Women Project."

The P.O.F.W project is portraying stories specific of incarcerated African American women through art, coupled with the inmate participates revealing life stories of children and families they've left behind. Each exhibited portrait includes each woman's "In her own words" statement underneath the painting.

“Because of an Art platform and filmmaking their voices will be heard,” said Ms. La Faye. Her work begins with the Washington Correctional Center for Women, aka WCCW) in December 2018-January 2019, and will continue to visit prisons around the country during 2019. Adrienne estimates the project will take close to two years to complete.

When one examines the MEANING OF LIFE, the most crucial intrapersonal navigational tool is Growth, and it's the hardest to apply to oneself: The root of an existential crisis is; Why do I exist? And How can I make myself better? Can you imagine how hard one could be hit with this type of truth, while incarcerated?

HISTORY:

“My goal is to give imprisoned Black women their voice through them telling their stories coupled with my portraits. These women are historically disenfranchised, marginalized by our society. Folks tend NOT to believe the voice of the unheard, and it's irrelevant to their world.”

“This project designed to build the ladies self-esteem to retell their stories and, humanize the women to the Public. Most importantly, that their VOICES  heard.

“I know what incarceration feels like, because of my crack addiction of twelve years, and I found my voice only after I'd been clean & sober over two years. Now eighteen years later I’m determined and committed to helping women find "The meaning to life." We all deserve a second chance.”

The end goal is a public exhibition, and a Film of the entire process.” THE ALASEA NETWORK GoFundMe page is seeking $75,000 to cover the hiring, art supplies, Platform rent/lease cost, traveling, marketing/advertising and filmmaking, etc., to best represent these stories.

When African American women are in prison, they:

·        Are less likely to receive visitors than any other demographic in the world.

·        Are likely to have the law applied in a different way than their white male counterparts.

·        Are likely to have defended themselves against intimate-partner violence.
