The Stevens Point/Plover Metro Wire was born out of necessity when, in November 2017, several positions within another news organization were eliminated suddenly due to the financial problems of its out-of-town owners. That move left the Stevens Point and Plover communities without local daily news coverage from trained, professional journalists.
Immediately following the shake-up, our newsroom began to rebuild so the flow of news went uninterrupted. We recognize, as many of you do, the importance of trained journalists following local business, schools, youth sports, community events and breaking news.
Our website and Facebook pages are growing wildly, as word spreads about the discarding of longtime, trusted journalists through no fault of their own. Our staff knows this community well, and we care about its well-being: both are driving forces behind our DAILY, TO-THE-MINUTE news coverage.
Soon, we plan to once again become the LARGEST NEWS OUTLET IN PORTAGE COUNTY!
Our future includes the addition of podcasts and webcasts on local issues, youth sports, community events and local nightlife, and live-streaming coverage of the area's most popular events, all FREE OF CHARGE to our readers!
But there are a thousand details to which we must attend, and starting any new news organization also means starting a new business. There are many costs we incur, but due to our unexpected dismissals, have no capital to fund.
Our jobs are too important to the community for us to simply give up. We are currently putting together a sales staff to drive operating revenue, but for the next month or so, we have journalists we need to pay.
We don't have time to be proud or embarrassed. Our journalists are currently working for you 50+ hours a week for FREE, SO WE NEED YOUR HELP!
