Hi, Pittsburg Kansas debate and forensics team here. We participate in competitive speaking, and we're pretty good at it. This year, we have qualified two teams for the National Debate tournament held in Dallas Texas in June of 2015! In past years we have always been funded 100% and supported all the way to nationals, but unfortunately due to budget cuts at a state level, every cent has been withdrawn from our nationals funding, so we have no way to attend the tournament and have all of our hard work pay off. We work night and day all year long, putting countless hours into research, practice, and competition in preparation to qualify for this prestigious tournament, and we did! We would be devastated if all of this work was to go to waste because the state cut all of our funding. We are asking you to donate anything you can to help us get to nationals and do what we love. Anything will help us get to where we need to go. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this, and please show your support by donating to our cause.

Dear PHS Debate & Forensics Supporter,
At the National Qualifier Tournament in December, Pittsburg Debate qualified two policy debate teams to the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas, Texas. This means that our teams of Ethan Hawn/Joseph Mathew and Haley Uttley/Zach Uttley placed 1st and 2nd out of the entire Southeast Kansas district! During forensics season, we gained even more national qualifiers. Kaylie Duncan qualified in Original Oration, Jason McDonald in Foreign Extemp, and Gina Mathew in US Extemp! Everyone has worked all season striving to reach this goal, and our work paid off. Qualifying for Nationals is a prestigious accomplishment and honor. At the tournament, we have a chance to compete and learn from students coming from all across the nation.
In early February, the PHS Debate and Forensics team became aware that we were not going to have our trip to the National Tournament funded due to budget cuts at the state level.
Immediately, the team and parents got together to brainstorm fundraising ideas, and remained optimistic that we would make the trip happen. We decided to launch a GoFundMe page, but had no idea what the response would be.
One month later, between the GoFundMe page and private donations, over 60 of you raised a grand total of $4,435! The response was amazing. It was so fun to watch the number rise online, and read the comments you all left. Some donated because debate changed their life. Some donated because they received a scholarship, and wanted to give back. Some donated in honor of family members and debate alumni who have passed. We discovered an entire network of debate allies who genuinely care about us, the activity, and its future. Beyond donations, many of you called our school board, and expressed your concerns about our funding situation. This was very effective.
Shortly after, the PHS Debate and Forensics team was invited to attend a board meeting where we were told our district would cover the remaining of the costs for our trip to the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas!
When we are competing at Nationals, we are competing for all of you. This has been an amazing journey for all of us, and we would not be heading to Dallas without your support.
In the meantime, we will be prepping our events, and talking to walls…
Sincerely,
Coach Julie Laflen & the PHS 2015 National Qualifiers
