PETER OYLER’S LAST ‘RAAM-FOR-JACK’

$30,585 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 93 people in 11 months
I’m Peter Oyler and many of you know me as the owner of mindset Cycling in Toronto, Canada.

I am asking for your support for my fourth and final Race Across America (RAAM) to define the limits of human endurance and most importantly raise awareness and funds for youth mental health in Canada.

RAAM,  as it’s known,  is a non-stop cycling race from San Diego County to Annapolis, Maryland. At over 3,000 miles, it is about 30% longer than the Tour de France, but must be completed in half the time. To finish within the twelve-day time limit, racers must pedal as many as 20 plus hours a day, endure temperatures from zero to 46 degrees centigrade, and climb 170,000 vertical feet. That’s six times the height of Mount Everest.

All funds raised here beyond the cost of staging my race will go to Jack.org.  Jack.org is Canada’s only charity training and empowering young leaders to revolutionize mental health in every province and territory.

Endurance racing has taught me what we as humans are capable of – sometimes the hard way. In 2009, I had to stop when I went into kidney failure after pushing myself too hard for too long. But I took what I learned and tried the race again in 2013 and produced my fastest cross-continental finish time yet: 10 days, 15 hours and 16 minutes, an average speed of 18.8 km/h.

So why do it again? Simply put, I believe there is more in me and what I can do after the event. More important, it is time to get endurance racing out of my system so I can devote myself fully to helping others push their own boundaries. I have inspired so many clients to do everything from their first Gran Fondo, to Ironman Triathlons and 900-mile cycling races. I have so much knowledge to share. It is time to make other people’s dreams my sole focus.

RAAM leaves Oceanside, California June 11th, 2019. In order to get to Annapolis, I need a crew of eight, three support vehicles, food, flights, hotels, and to ship equipment. I am pursuing sponsorship opportunities, so there is a good chance there will be funds left over that I will donate to jack.org. I ask anyone not wishing to contribute to the race itself, to please consider making a direct donation to jack.org using the following link:  https://jack.akaraisin.com/community/PeterOyler

Some of you are new to my RAAM dreams, while many many others are great supporters from past races.  I thank you all for your continued faith in me.

Happy July 10th everyone!l I arrived safely in Annapolis, Maryland back on June 22nd. I had posted a slightly different version of this thank you on Facebook a little while ago. Not sure why I did not post here!! Kinda tired I guess! Thanks to the awesome crew of 9 that supported me on the road from California to Annapolis we completed RAAM for the 3rd time. Without Janet Wilson, Carol Ann Weis, Peter Karmazsin, Diego Ricetto, Bruce Thomson, Quentin Broad, Greg Gannon, Dave West and my dad, I could not have made the successful crossing in 11 days. Each member of the crew, contributed time and energy that I could never repay. To each of them, I am forever thankful and can only hope that I might be able to, at some point spend some time with them on the bike or in person drinking a coffee to relive the adventure. Considered a race, and the fact that RAAM takes a huge amount of finance to achieve, I want to thank each and every person from the bottom of my heart that took the time to contribute to me financially both through GOFUNDME and separately so that I could undertake the mission of a 4th attempt and final RAAM. As I sit and type this, looking back, it is hard to believe that it is all over. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Everyone that made Peter Oyler's 4th RAAM a success is part of something special. It takes all kinds of people and all kinds of feelings and an outpouring of support that allow a man or a women the chance to not only get to the start line but all the way to the finish line. Given this is my 3rd finish, I feel very honoured to say, I believe that I am the only Canadian to ever accomplish this in history. Thank you again to anyone who helped in making this dream for me a reality. As a result of this RAAM, Jack.org continues to be recognized as some funding from jersey sales and peoples separate donations on my GoFundMe page have gone directly to Jack.org.
Thank you again everyone! Onwards I go to other things that life might "ride" my way. For the immediate future it is just about getting recovered and sharing time with close family and friends. Although she never rides, I must say a special thanks to my great wife Kathy who has supported me throughout this journey for so many years!
Love to everyone, keep your head up!
