This money being raised is for ALS and ALS only.
Meaning ANY money left over and items that can be donated will ALL go to the Orange County ALS chapter . The goal is to be able to purchase items small and large like a used transportation van, to payment for any additional car giving help needed. (Kaiser for a monthly fee will rent some items needed. Caretaking is not covered)
Here is my (Lisa Tickenoff one of Pauls kids) story:
Our Pa started noticing symtoms of loosing strength in his arms first around Jan 2016, it progressed, so much so, that when I was doing my Pa's hair, at my salon, I needed to untwist water bottle caps for him.
After months of tests and Dr visits, and zero answers, they resorted to a spinal tap, and our Pa was officially diagnosed with "ALS". Our Pa was precessing this new scary news, doing research, gathering information.
Two weeks later Pa came to my cosmetology school on Aug 3, 2016 when I was teaching so I could do his hair (using him as a live model) I noticed a exhausted & stressed energy right away, assuming it was about work (Our Pa, is and has been a dedicated worker in the gymnastics world, got a full ride scolarship to college from gymnastics, competed professionally and has been coaching and judging to this day. He travels primarily around the west coast, organizing and judging meets. He is also in the gymnastics hall of fame! He knows I love to say that! He could care less, which I dont understand, but he is humble) He told me he had been diagnosed with ALS, and that its not good. I had heard of ALS from the ice bucket challenge, but did not know what ALS really was still. After my Pa left, I knew I was not going to like what I researched, so I waited 2 days, then swan dived straight into researching. I then got involved that same day with the ALS Orange County chapter, Natalie, is amazing! Her and the staff put up with my numerous phone calls asking questions. We then set up a family meeting with my step mom and siblings at my Pa's house Oct 7, 2016 to go over everything, making sure everyone understodd what ALS was, care taking and wishes of our Pa. I have personaly had comfort in the fact that God is looking out for our Pa, me and my family throughout this. I have had new clients come in who are either in the medical field and worked with ALS patients or who had a family member pass from it (or both). I also attended a care giver meeting and it so turned out, I was the only attendee, but got connected with a 90yr old pistol packin mamma who's son has ALS and is one of the top 10 pistol instructors in the US! Who said she would adopt me if i didn't already have such a awesome family (I'm in love with competition shooting (paper targets only!) so that was a nice connection, me and my new friend "Whinny" could have together!
All that being said, these connections and relationships i was able to personally make with these kind folks, never would had happened, or heard their story, if it wasnt for this evil disease. Which is a nice flicker of light in a dark tunnel!)
We are all praying for a miracle or cure. This is a very rare disease. So awareness and early detection for doctors, to gather more information, along with funding for a cure, is high on my personal list now.
