Patrick Martin’s mom (Velnor Lockamy) passed away on July 18th. His dad (Patrick Martin, Sr.) passed away on March 7th, 2016.

It is always challenging when a parent dies, but when both pass away in such a short period of time, it is a shock to the system. Due to the nature of his parents’ illnesses, Patrick knew this was a possibility, yet nothing can prepare one for when it actually happens.

Knowing of his parents’ health challenges, Patrick chose to focus his time and energy in 2015 & 2016 to help his parents. At first, his hope was that he could extend their lives and help them heal. When it became apparent this was not to happen, Patrick helped ensure their quality of life and care was the best it could be as they moved towards their transition. Patrick was the primary caregiver for both of his parents during this process. Now that both parents have both made their transition, it is time for Patrick to rebuild his life.

Patrick moved into his mom’s home a few years ago, as she began having health challenges. By then he had received extensive schooling, along with training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), at Teachers College Columbia University. He was in the process of building a successful health coaching practice and truly enjoyed helping make the world a better place.

In January, 2015, Patrick started attending massage school with the intention of supplementing his existing energetic body work skills, and expanding his practice beyond health coaching into a more fully integrated holistic healing practice.

Early in 2015, his Mom’s health started to noticeably decline, and he devoted more time to assisting her. In May, 2015, his dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His dad was living in Texas at the time, in conditions not conducive to the care he needed for his illness. Patrick traveled to Texas and brought his father back to his mom’s home in Tacoma to better support the health care of both his parents.

Due to the severity of both parents’ illnesses, complex care needs, as well as time and energy constraints, Patrick ended up having to drop massage School, and was unable to add new clients to his health coaching practice.

For Patrick, 2016 has consisted of full-time care of both his parents, at home. After his dad passed away in March, Patrick made sure his mom could spend her final months at home, as she requested. Modifications were made to the house to allow his mom to get in and out, and in her final days she received round-the-clock hospice care, which Patrick provided both through his own acts and by managing other professional caregivers.

It truly takes a special individual to do what Patrick did. This was a beautiful and selfless act, one that is extremely rare in today’s society. Even though Patrick did this at great sacrifice, he was committed to assisting his parents in the last stages of their lives. He let go of his livelihood, and was forced to use all his previous savings to pay for living expenses and to ensure his parents had adequate care over the last two years. With his mom’s passing, ownership of her home will soon revert to her mortgage lender, thus requiring Patrick to find new housing.

With his parents’ passing, Patrick is now ready to start rebuilding his life. In order to do this, Patrick needs and is ready to accept our support, both emotional, spiritual, and financial. As in any situation where one cares for a loved one at the level Patrick did, it becomes all-consuming, and there can be a loss of self. It also changes a person profoundly. As Patrick is a person of passion, with a strong desire to help people who want and need help, he needs both time and finances to re-enter the world in which he serves with a renewed determination and vigor.

He is currently in the process of re-building a support circle of friends & loved ones to assist him in his own healing, and to use as a sounding board as he plans for the future. If you have interest in serving in that capacity, he would appreciate hearing from you.

As far as financial assistance, any amount would help. The funds will be put to good use in paying for expenses related to living, holistic and integrative rejuvenation, accumulated bills, and providing Patrick some breathing room to close out his mom’s estate and get his footing as to what is next for him, in both his personal and professional life. This GoFundMe will be up intil April of 2017.

While assessing what you would like to contribute, remember the ways that Patrick may have touched your life, all that he has done in the world helping people make healthy lifestyle choices, and the level of commitment, care and love he showed his parents as they transitioned from this world to the next.

We can think of no one more deserving to help during this time of transition than Patrick. He is one of those individuals who truly makes a difference in whatever he does, and whomever he touches.

May love and peace be with you….
