The aircraft was abandoned in a distant field in Nova Scotia, much like a shipwreck at the bottom of the sea. My father saw the potential and with a few of his buddies salvaged the aircraft and took it back to his airfield in Alexandria, Ontario. However, despite counting on this Antonov to breathe life into his small skydiving outfit, the restoration has proven itself to be a much bigger endeavor than anticipated and my father has run out of steam.
That's where I come in. I love flying. I love planes and I want to fly this one. It is the perfect type of aircraft for the location and intended purpose of taking up skydivers. 18 000 AN-2's were produced, but only 3 are in Canada. With it's high payload and it's ability to take off from short field runways is why this aircraft is the only one that suits the needs of Alexandria Skydive.
This colossal project has to be undertaken soon or it will once again be forgotten perhaps indefinitely this time.
Contrary to the many who turned us away, we found a repair shop with the will, despite the enormous amount of labor that will be involved, and the know-how to restore the aircraft. They even agreed to teach me and let me work on this enormous fabric covered bi-plane whenever possible. I will do a lot of the scrubbing work.
The aircraft maintenance shop took the time to produce an estimate with the list of repairs which include an engine, a prop and new fabric. This is on top of the paint (maybe silver) which scheme keeps changing.
The complete restoration will cost between 100K and 150K dollars depending on unpredictable variables.
The objective is an Oshkosh award winning plane, that will be the workhorse of the Alexandria Skydiving operation.

C'est le modèle d'avion parfait pour les besoins du club de parachutisme. 18,000 AN-2 ont été produit mais il y en a que 3 au Canada. Avec sa grande charge utile et sa capacité de décoller d'une courte piste est pourquoi cet avion est le seul en mesure de surmonter les défis opérationnels d'Alexandria.
Ce projet colossale doit être entammé bientôt ou il tombera dans l'oublie encore peut-être indéfiniment cette fois.
Contairement aux plusieurs qui m'ont retourné de bord, nous avons trouvé un atelier de réparation avec l'intérêt, malgré l'énorme tâche impliquée, et le savoir-faire pour restaurer l'avion. Ils sont même d'accord pour m'enseigner et de me laisser travailler sur cet énorme bi-plan en toile lorsque possible. Je vais faire beaucoup du travail de nettoyage.
