Panama Andy's Dog Rescue Sanctuary

As many of you know, Kim and I spend several weeks a year in the sleepy beach town of Gorgona.  Over the years we've spent a lot of time heading down to the beach to feed the numerous stray dogs who hang out by the fishing boats.  These dogs are often malnourished and quite often are afflicted with mange and parasites.  They lack proper vet care and many are not yet spayed or neutered, which leads to a new generation of strays every six months.

Recently, the government has started a program to spay and neuter these dogs, but there is little infrastructure and organization involved.  This is where we would like to step in.

We met a sweet dog we named Panama Andy on our last trip.  He was in very bad shape, covered in mange, thin, sickly, no doubt infested with parasites.

We decided at that moment that we had to do something more than feed these dogs for a week or two every time we visited.  It's at that moment the idea for the creation of an actual dog rescue operation was born.  We've named it Panama Andy's Dog Rescue Sanctuary.  We've already found an on-the-ground partner to help facilitate the day-to-day operations.  Her name is Patricia Salas, and she lives year round in the same condo.  She spends every day doing what she can to help the dogs, but lacks proper funding to really make a difference.  In her words, "Without your help I will just continue with what I am doing, and may be prolonging their misery by boosting their immune system with supplements, not being enough for what they need. It is making me question what I do every day."

What we need is proper funding.  We have already gone out of pocket by a significant amount, and there's only so much we can do on our own financially.  Luckily, a small amount can go a long way in Panama.

This is Andy today, free of mange and parasites!

This is our plan.  We have begun scouting for property in the area, with a large amount of land for the dogs to run and play freely, and a small house with running water and electricity.  Once we find the property, we will install a chainlink fence around it and begin to collect the strays.  Once we have them in the shelter, we will coordinate with the local vets to have them visit the shelter and give the dogs proper treatment, including getting them all spayed and neutered.  Additionally, we will provide them with proper nutrition.  And finally, we will look to get each one adopted.

We CAN make a significant impact on this situation, but we need some help.  Any contribution made will go to the care of these animals.  Every penny.  This is not for profit.  It's for the love of these sweet dogs.

Thanks for reading. ~Tom, Kim, Patricia and Panama Andy
