Pal Peggy -Surgery to reconstruct her upper jaw!

Donation protected

In  2008 my pal Peggy Butler had to have her upper jaw reconstructed
because of severe osteonecrosis of the maxilla. In laymen's terms, she'd lost most of the bone that comprised her upper jaw. She had bone grafting and implants inserted with skin grafting to protect the implants, all at four to six month intervals.

Now, eleven years later, she is losing bone from the bone graft and already had to have one implant surgically removed due to extreme loosening and infection and another slipped up into her maxillary sinus, where it remains, a precarious situation at best. Now, all the remaining implants are loose because the bone around them is disappearing.

Oral surgeons will not see her until she can assure them  she has the tens of thousands of dollars needed for the co-pay. They won't give her an estimate until they see her. In 2008, she needed $18,000 total out of pocket. Until they see her and  get the scans that will tell them the severity of the problem currently, she won't know how much they will charge. Oral surgeons charge a great deal and unlike most other surgeons, they require tens of thousands of dollars up front. Her insurance will pay a percentage of the cost for bone grafting and implants, however she has only a few hundred in savings, so I'd like to help her out by setting up a GoFundMe account to cover her copays.

Without this surgery, she will have to go the remainder of her life without her smile. Without a smile, she can no longer do her volunteer ushering which she loves to do and without her smile, her great-grandchildren will not see that kind of visual evidence of her love for them, and that thought is heartbreaking for her.

Plus, of course, she will not be able to eat normally as she would with implanted teeth. Eating now is very difficult. Cut up pasta is fairly manageable, besides oatmeal and soft poached or boiled egg. She can eat nothing that requires chewing on either side of her mouth, so anything else she eats (veggies, fruits, fish) must be blended so she can drink it or pureed so it will not require chewing. Even without chewing, there is constant discomfort because they are loose.
