A fundraiser is being held for our upcoming exhibit: Racing to Change: Oregon’s Civil Rights Years 2018 Exhibit and Community Dialogue
The entire board of Oregon Black Pioneers is asking for your help :We need your help to raise $200,00 which will help us to design, develop, and implement Racing to Change: Oregon’s Civil Rights Years.
Funding sources include grants, sponsorships, in-kind contributions, and donations.
Civil Rights in Oregon
Racing to Change: Oregon’s Civil Rights Years is a groundbreaking exhibit and associated programs about the courage, struggle and progress of Oregon’s black residents during the civil rights movement in Oregon in the 1960s and 1970s.
This interactive project will engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds as it traces how housing and employment discrimination practices affected Oregon’s black populations and spurred the civil rights movement in Portland and outlying areas.
The exhibit connects Oregon’s state legislative action barring education, employment and housing discrimination practices, and Oregon’s 1953 State Civil Rights bill, with national civil rights milestones.
Racing to Change: Oregon’s Civil Rights Years is a partnership project with The Oregon Historical Society and will be on display at The Oregon History Museum January 15 - June 2018. The exhibit will be available for other venues in 2018.
Connecting With Today’s Oregon
Through personal photos and artifacts, text, and interactive experiences, the exhibit illuminates Oregon’s vibrant black community during the civil rights era, amongst a larger context of discrimination and displacement.
Through the exhibit and accompanying community dialogues and programs, visitors will connect and compare past conditions with present-day realities.
Three monologue performances entitled Through Our Own Eyes and centered around the civil rights movement and Jefferson High School during the 60s, 70s and 80s have been developed.
Connecting with Today’s Children
Most importantly, The Oregon Historical Society is helping create curriculum materials and organizing school visits for this extraordinary exhibit. Interactive experiences and oral history projects will help children connect with African American history and the civil rights movement.

Oregon Black Pioneers is the state’s premier organization dedicated to illuminating African Americans’ contributions to Oregon’s history through research, publications, exhibits, and community outreach.
We serve children and school groups and communities organizations annually. This exhibit builds on three past highly successful collaborations with The Oregon Historical Society, and reflects the all-volunteer organization’s increasing capacity to create meaningful opportunities for dialogue and learning.
