Norman Marshall Villeneuve Drum Scholarship

This fundraiser is to help Norman fund the Norman Marshall Villeneuve Drum Scholarship. 100% of funds raised will go directly to the Scholarship to assist a drum student enrolled at a Canadian college or university. The annual Scholarship is $500. For the 2017-18 academic year, the Scholarship will be awarded to a student chosen by the faculty at Humber College, Toronto. In past years, the Scholarship has been awarded both to Concordia University and Humber College.
Established in 2012, Norman's Scholarship is awarded to a student, chosen by the faculty, who is enrolled in a jazz program, with high academic standing, musicianship, leadership and a passion for jazz. The Scholarship as an incentive to support and inspire the students and let them know Norman, now in his 8th decade in music, believes in them and the future of jazz in Canada.
Norm's began his career in Montreal's famed Little Burgundy, making his debut as a tap dancer at Union United Church in 1948 at age 10. In 1955, he joined the American Federation of Musicians Union and began his professional career as a drummer, at age 17. Now in his 8th decade in music, Norman is a beloved icon of Canadian Jazz, who has given performance opportunities to hundreds of young musicians performances throughout Canada. Legendary pianist Oliver Jones said of him, "No one I know has done more to encourage young artists and than Norman."
Norm says, "The best way to celebrate my life is to pass on my happiness and joy for jazz to young students. I hope my Scholarship will encourage them to continue their music education. Maybe seeing me still perform at my age and know I believe in them as young artists might be an inspiration and encourage their journey in music. This year my Scholarship will be awarded to a student in the jazz program at Humber College. I know and have performed with many of the faculty at Humber and am proud of their outstanding achievements.
I also hope other musicians will be inspired to give awards or scholarships in their names too. It is very important to help these youngsters and let them know we believe in them and also I know these awards are very satisfying for their teachers. It’s the gift that keeps on giving - laying it down for the future. I am very proud of all the talented young men and women who, since 2012, have received my Scholarship. I hope this fundraiser will allow me to continue to support them."
