While most students go to private schools performing at or above grade level, most arrive at North Valley below where they should be -

88% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, a common measure of student poverty.
10% are homeless
10 % are in the foster care system
20% have special needs

Tuition at private military schools can rival college costs. At Randolph-Macon, it’s $37,409 for high school boarding students from the U.S., more for international students. About 35 percent of students receive financial aid and the average award is $8,500, staff said.

SAN FERNANDO SUN: NVMI Honors Veterans 

This is where your money will go:  

1.      Our military model, key to the success of NVMI students, requires an additional $2,500, bringing the total to $12,500 per student, which is still at the low end of the state’s averages.  We currently have 602 Students along with a WAITING LIST!

2.      To be specific, NVMI’s additional annual costs per student include:

a.      $550 for uniforms, military awards, decorations, accouterments that encourage excellence

b.      $675 in bus transportation to and from NVMI and other school competitions

c.      $385 for intensive academic supports and credit recovery

d.      $345 in mental health and counseling supports

e.      $190 in intramural/interscholastic athletic supplies and services outside the typical school

f.       $365 in outdoor education experiences (backpacking, summer camps, survival training)

3.      NVMI’s school motto says it all: “per ardua, ad astra”-- with hard work the stars.  We are asking for your support now so we can continue to serve our students living in the San Fernando Valley who are poor; at-risk; some homeless; some living in foster care; and more than 20% who qualify for special education.  The one common thread that runs through our student body is their efforts to find a way out of the crime and gangs that threaten their lives.

b.      Ethnicity - 95% Hispanic; 3% African American

c.      Socioeconomic status – 91% Free and reduce lunch eligible families

d.      20% Special Education

e.      10% Homeless and Foster Youth

5.      School Successes

a.      Academics –

i.     Graduation rates – 92% within four years of high school enrollment; 100% within five years of high school enrollment

 ii.     College acceptance rates – 75% accepted to four year colleges and universities

iii.     91% of enrollees function two or more grade levels below in reading, English, and math; 77% make 1.5 years of growth or more in a single year, thus “catching up” (being at grade level usually after three years of enrollment)

b.      Athletics  -

i.     28 interscholastic sports teams at middle school and high school levels (including cross county, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls volleyball, track and field, boys and girls lacrosse, flag football, 8-man tackle football, baseball, and softball)

ii.     Playoff appearances in 8-man football, girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and boys and girls soccer

iii.     Intramural athletics for ALL cadets all year involving 30+ different sports

c.      Leadership
i.     12th grade nominations to Air Force Academy & Military Academy at West Point

ii.     Over 180 leadership positions from squad (8 cadets) to brigade (all 600 cadets)

iii.     2nd place in World Drill Team Unarmed Drill Championships

d.      Citizenship

i.     30,000 hours per year of community service performed

ii.     36,000 hours per year of school service performed

 iii.     Cadet Respect and Honor Council hold cadets responsible for adherence to strict honor code
