Missy's Barn

$450 of $6,000 goal

My husband and I started the Rainier Equine Hoof Recovery Center in 2009.   Since then we have helped many equines who have come to us with behavioral and hoof issues that caused them to be unwanted. We have been working on funding a hay barn/horse shelter for months now for our 25 rescue equines and 5 resident horses, when out of the blue an arena that was scheduled to be demolished was donated to us by a generous contractor.  We were elated to know that we could get the trusses, posts and other lumber for only the cost of taking it down and transporting it.

The catch was that it was almost 4 hours round trip and we had 2 weeks to take it down and move it off the property.  We had no idea if this could be done with only a few people, a backhoe, several trailers, and rented sky lift.

Rich did most the work, but with help from our friend, Ray Odiorne, sister Linda Morgan, grandson, Griffin Glover and good friends, Milt and Judy Emerick...WE DID IT!

We are naming this barn for our oldest mare Missy, because Missy is the horse that started our journey into natural horse and hoof care.  It was because of Missy that we came to start our equine rescue facility and have saved many horses from being euthanized over the years.  But with the staggering economy and changes in our income status, we found ourselves working hard just to keep this group fed.

We started baling our own hay in partnership with Ray, which has helped keep feed costs more manageable, but we quickly discovered hay storage was a challenge.  We took up the covered area that our horses were using for shelter from the weather to store hay and they have been exposed to all types of weather for years.

So now we have the building, but we need help constructing it here.   Which means we have to apply for and purchase the county permits.  And because the posts on the original structure were rotten, we have to purchase new posts at nearly $200 each.  We need to reimburse the cost of the equipment used to remove the trusses as well.

We are hoping friends will join us in putting the structure back up on our property for the horses.  Several people have already donated to our first campaign, and we appreciate their help very much, but we only raised a few hundred dollars towards our goal.

And now with all the donated materials, the funding needed for our structure is less, but we still need help.

If you can help out our rescues, that would be great.  Most have already been to the graveside and back and we just want to keep them going until we can get some of them into great homes, while the others are long term sanctuary horses and they really need this barn.

Missy, our matriarch mare, may not be with us much longer as she is 28 years old and we really want to honor her in this way.

Thank you!

We have cleared our site where we will be erecting the shelter/hay storage barn. Our plan is to put up 2 structures from the one building we took down and transported here. But we need to purchase new posts because the posts in the building we took down had rotted in the ground. Each posts costs approximately $200 and we need 20 of them. The remaining funds will rent the equipment needed to erect the building and any other materials that did not survive the trip from here. Just an update! Thank you so much for your generous support! We are still holding out hope that our horses will have this shelter by the end of the year.
