Mama's Emergency Move Fund

This week, my mom will be forced to move out of the home her late parents built with their own hands and into a small apartment so that the estate can sell it. Unfortunately, the family would not agree to continue leasing it as a rental to her (nor can she afford to buy it), so I am trying to help my mom resettle into a much smaller apartment, since it is all she can afford.
For those of you who know me well, you know that my mom is my best friend and closest family. You know that she has worked her fingers to the bone to make sure I had everything I needed to be successful in school despite growing up poor – from home-made Halloween costumes to a year-long supply of toothpaste when I moved to Korea on a Fulbright fellowship. Now is the time I can begin to pay her back for all her sacrifices.
The move is likely to be more expensive than we originally hoped (in labor hours by the moving company) since neither our family nor community organizations near our suburban Upstate NY home offered any type of physical or financial assistance in getting her belongings packed up. It has also been a mentally and emotionally draining process to leave her childhood home behind.
As a senior citizen who is currently fighting cancer and Type II diabetes, my mom deserves better than this. I am doing everything I can to get her comfortably resettled – including covering moving expenses and replacing furniture that is too large to fit in the new apartment – but I still have my own financial responsibilities including student loan payments and living expenses. So I can’t do it alone.
Any donations from this page will go directly towards:
1) Paying the moving company;
2) Purchasing a new bed and sofa that is appropriately sized for the apartment (she hasn’t had a new mattress in 30 years -- which may sound ridiculous but she spent everything she earned to raise me -- and our current sofa won’t fit);
Should we reach the $2,000 goal for this campaign, any additional funds above and beyond the goal will go directly to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital – a cause close to my mom’s heart – in her name.
