Fred Mitchell (68 years old), people in his home community of Poplar River, MB also known as "Sagay", not the singer. Anyone that knows our Dad, he was a hard working man willing to volunteer above his working hours at the church, school, band office, and anyone wanting or needing help. Fred also served his community as a Band Councilor for approximately 20 years in total.
Fred was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) a chronic and progressive lung disease where the air sac in the lungs (alveoli) becomes scarred and stiff making it difficult to breathe and get enough oxygen into the bloodstream. The disease has progressed and he is requiring home oxygen. At present he is renting a mobile oxygen concentrator at $400 a month. Dad is weak and the oxygen concentrator allows him more freedom as it is light weight and portable, in order to attend his therapy and in his home then the huge oxygen tanks which are cumbersome and restrict his freedom. The family are asking for donations toward the purchase of the home oxygen concentrator (quoted cost $3200) and an Oximeter (machine to measure oxygen in his blood) (approximate cost $280-$320).
He and his partner Winnifred are currently in the city for physiotherapy and education/training on how to manage his symptoms until mid-December. We are looking to raise funds to cover the rental payment of the oxygen concentrator due on Nov 3rd and then purchase the equipment outright as soon as the funds are raised in full.
A bake sale will be hosted on Saturday, November 3rd at 1:00 - 5:00pm. Volunteers will be appreciated. If you would like to donate baked goods or purchase any yummy fresh baked goods the fundraiser will be held at Blessings Church at 621 College Ave, Winnipeg, MB.
