Literacy Volunteers Association: Improving Lives Beyond Words

Imagine being unable to complete a job application, understand a doctor, or read to your child. In New Jersey, 1 out of 6 residents lack basic literacy skills. Nationwide, 43% of people with low literacy skills live in poverty.

Literacy Volunteers Association Cape-Atlantic, Inc. (LVA) is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization that provides free literacy education to adults in the region.

Due to state budget cuts, LVA is losing more than $70,000 in funding, nearly half of our annual budget.

We need your help to continue training tutors and teaching students. For $100, LVA is able to train a tutor. For only $35, we can provide materials to teach a student.

Until now, only 4% of LVA’s revenue has come from donations. But if we want to continue helping families succeed, we need your help. When you donate, you are improving lives beyond words. Thank you for your support.

Literacy Volunteers Association Cape-Atlantic, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations are fully tax deductible as charitable contributions within the limits of law.

There are many Gofundme campaigns to give aid to people in desperate times. Those causes are noble. However, think for a moment about donating to a cause that strives for prevention. This program offers important life skills and coping skills, along with ESL and literacy programs, to adults who don't have another place to learn.
Unless you've lived in a foreign country and have had to learn to manage trivial things, like a package delivery, or a serious matter, such as an ER visit, it is easy to overlook how vital these skills are. I have been lucky. I've been abroad with support from a university and my husband. I will never be the mother trying to figure out childcare, doctor’s visits, or finances in a foreign country. I will never be the woman with no independence because I wasn't allowed an education as a child.
Without the ability to effectively communicate people can't get help and they have a harder time helping themselves. Literacy and ESL keep people safer. It helps give women agency and keeps them out of dangerous situations and shelters. Education fights poverty and extremism. Sadly, our government is cutting funding to programs like LVA that help adults.

The Literacy Volunteers Association, where my mother works, does wonderful and much-needed work in the community. They help immigrants and their families enter the work force, go to school, and navigate everyday situations. The help older adults who have trouble reading gain more independence. My mother even designed a program to help women understand money management in the US, helping them attain agency and security. They are a force for good, and it is vital that they keep their doors open.

Please consider donating to help them continue to serve their community.
