Project Literacy - Syrian Refugees
$1,000 of $1,000 goal
That's how Syrian refugees will feel after experiencing:
1) Creative picture book Khadijah goes to School (in English)
2) The Champion for Life(TM), a 300 language Human Progress social idea. Poster: 2 feet high X 3 feet wide.
I intend to run this campaign in 2 steps:
Raise $1000 for printing costs for both items for 100 Syrian refugee families in Toronto. Smaller quantities cost more with the poster unit price costing the most.
I will distribute both educational items to Syrian refugees. I am OPEN to working with 1 or more groups/people. This is being worked out as we speak but will be easy to deliver as there are many groups/people looking for educational material. Email firstname.lastname@example.org if interested.
Both items make a critical difference in empowerment because Syrian refugees can SEE themselves in the work. MORE reasons:
1) Refugees can relate to Khadijah (the main character), a young girl in a hijab (scarf) in pictures
2) Refugees can relate to the English/Arabic calligraphy
3) Opens from the right! (Like Arabic, yet in English)
4) Is about new beginnings, the Canadian flag present on some pages including the cover!
And a beautiful experience for ALL:
5) Explores the power of Literacy and Education
6) Explores the power of Human Potential
7) The story is centred around the human message of "Helping Yourself And Helping Other People(TM)"
8) Produced in and based in Canada, the country Syrian refugees now call home.
Some REVIEWS on Khadijah goes to School:
"...innovative, colourful and groundbreaking." – NOW Magazine
“Reading is believing…It also champions diversity… ”
– UofT Magazine
“It truly encapsulates the spirit of The Word On The Street as it promotes literacy as a fundamental skill of a good life.” – The Word on The Street Toronto
Ultimately, these reasons align with the human story of Progress. The Syrian refugee story is no different and for all these good reasons and more, make a great welcome gift.
I look forward to a successful campaign. Every dollar matters! Your contribution makes all the difference.
Khadijah goes to School was released in 2011. The 2nd edition was released in 2015.
The Champion for Life(TM) - Human Progress concept
Currently in poster format: 2 feet high X 3 feet wide
it's been a hectic time. Bin on the road doing some shows and working on some more projects but need to update you!
Firstly, a Big THANK YOU to ALL my supporters for giving me a chance to serve Syrian Refugees in Toronto. WE DID IT!!!! We raised $1000 in 24 days and delivered 100 books and 100 posters to 100 families!!!
Secondly, this project has officially come to a successful end. See the link of all the pictures below!
During Phase 2, I visited 3 different locations where I met Syrian Refugees. The first giveaway was in February where I gave 40 books and posters. The second and third giveaways was over March Break where I gave out the rest.
A couple of more things. I will keep this campaign link alive as a reference, however, GoFundMe has informed me that technically they cannot stop the "amount of time for the campaign" from accruing. In other words, if I keep this campaign up a year from now, it will say "$1000 raised in a year." They need to fix this!!
Lastly, I am working on a visual project to showcase The Champion for Life(TM), the poster that was given to Syrian Refugees. This will help people including you guys better understand what the concept is about. I hope to share this with you as soon as I can. I will be sending out an update once complete.
Again, THANK YOU so much for trusting me and giving me a wonderful opportunity to serve Syrian Refugees in Toronto. With your help, Khadijah goes to School is very likely to be their first book in Canada and may inspire some of these young people to do great things here. After all, this is what it's about, the message that Khadijah learns in the book, helping yourself and helping other people(TM).

Project Literacy - Syrian Refugees Toronto:
It's been a wonderful and emotional honour. Thank you so so so much.
I teamed up with Friendship in Action and gifted KGTS at the Children's Discovery Centre this past week. It was a SMASH!
Some 40 books and posters were given. There is still MORE THAN HALF to donate. I am actively reaching out to groups for distribution. If you know of Syrian refugee families who will benefit from KGTS and poster Champion for Life(TM), email email@example.com to make this happen.
Posted is a video of the event. Pictures are on the KGTS facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/khadijahgoestoschool
YES! $1000 has been successfully raised by 28 people in 24 days!
There's more to say but I'll wait for the campaign to be officially over.
### On to PHASE 2: Distribution ###
a) Live in the Toronto area
b) Have DIRECT contact with Syrian refugees who can benefit from my book and poster
c) Can ARRANGE a meeting with these families
THEN, I would like to donate 1 book and 1 poster per family.
Email me: firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange drop off. Include your name, phone number, number of families, their family names, and location of drop off.
Ideally, I would like to do this in the most easiest manner. i.e. if you are an event organizer OR we can get to a few families at a single time, we can present this to them. If you are organizing an event, having a book signing as part of your event would be a chance to distribute to many people in one go and be a memorable experience for them.
Responsibility to my donors:
I will be documenting Phase 2 through multi-media because I have an obligation to the donors who supported this project.
A couple of other notes:
1. If you are an educator or organization, you are encouraged to buy these resources (books:$10, posters: $20). These donated resources are strictly for non-inside-school use.
2. Those who have actually contributed to the campaign and have direct contact with Syrian refugees in Toronto, please email me indicating you were a donor. I will try and get you my work.
3. This is going to be an ad-hoc campaign and depending on limited supply, logistics and how many rightful requests there are, I will try to do my best to supply my work accordingly.
Both were launched at the largest Canadian Arts and Culture show in Canada this past week.
This is what Syrian refugees will get. The best of my work.
We are ONLY $130 away from making this REAL. Let's close this out!
