Last year's donation in 2017 of $66,400 was the annual record of donations. Nationally, last year over 1.2 million was raised for the Legacy Scholarship Fund. 4. The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund is a needs based scholarship designed to fulfill a financial gap after all federal and state scholarships/grants are utilized. There are two groups of eligible recipients: 1) Children of U.S. military members who died while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001 and 2) Children of post-9/11 veterans with a combined VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher. 5. The scholarship fund is professionally managed by The American Legion and 100% of donations go into the fund. Interest from the principal balance in the fund is used to fund scholarships.
