Lone Star College Tiny Home Project

Donazione protetta
With your generous support, students and faculty at Lone Star College – Kingwood, a community college in Houston, Texas, are hoping to raise $10,000. This money will be used to build a tiny home that will be donated to a local non-profit organization that works with the homeless population in the community. The home will be used as transitional housing for homeless individuals.  Despite the tireless effort of local charitable and religious organizations, there remains a significant lack of shelter for people in our community who find themselves without a home. This tiny house will provide a safe and comfortable place for them while they work to rebuild their lives.

The house will be designed and constructed to be economically and environmentally efficient. A 100-square foot floor plan will provide a reasonable amount of sleeping, living, and storage space at a low cost. The house will be built on a trailer, making it easily portable. A composting toilet will make it environmentally friendly while reducing long term costs. A shower, sink, kitchen appliances, heater and air conditioner will provide the conveniences and comforts of a standard home and enable the occupants to be fully self-sufficient.

The purpose of higher education is more than just equipping individual students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career; it must also foster in students an appreciation for the importance of using their skills and knowledge to become engaged citizens who will work together to create stronger, more vibrant communities.

With this in mind, students at Lone Star College - Kingwood will take part in a civic engagement and service learning project focusing on the issue of homelessness. Developmental English students will be conducting research and engaging in a variety of activities designed to deepen their understanding of homelessness in our community and inspire them to take action to address this problem. This project will culminate in the construction of a tiny home. Students have been working on the planning and design of the project and will assist in construction.

This project will be truly collaborative, combining the resources, knowledge, and efforts of the college’s students, faculty, and staff with local businesses, community members, and non-profits.  Please join us in our effort to provide a meaningful education experience and a real and lasting benefit for the people in our community!
