Help Kristen kick cancer!

Donation protected
Kristen married my little brother, Lucas, on May 20, 2017. I don’t think I could have hand picked a better person to become my sister. She is an amazing young lady, down to earth, sweet, smart, just a ray of sunshine, which explains why her nickname is sunshine! She is so very loved and adored by so many.

Within the past couple of months Kristen has had some health concerns come up which led to an MRI. The MRI showed a tumor located in her brain. Of course we were all devastated, but Kristen remained calm and her usual sunshine self, being patient and letting the doctors do their job.  About 2 weeks ago, just a few days after getting her MRI results, she returned home after her nursing classes for the day unable to catch her breath which led to an ER visit. They ran more test there and decided a transfer from the local ER to Macon was the best course of action. Once getting to Macon, another MRI was done and they found that the tumor was much larger than they thought and in her brain stem as well. The Doctors in Macon made the decision to transfer her to Emory in Atlanta to get the best possible treatment available.

She just returned home last night after a week stay in Atlanta where they found out her official diagnosis.... brain cancer.... a Level 4 Glioma in her brain stem. Gliomas are tricky little boogers, and are most often found in children. They affect less than 2% of adults, which led the doctors to believe her tumor has been growing anywhere from 5-10 years now.

Dr. Eaton who presented her case in front of a panel of pediatric oncologist, agreed that she was eligible to complete some trial testing. So a clinical trial is the course of action they will be taking. Even with the trial, there are many risks but there are SO many benefits. Because of the location, type and dangers of her tumor, named sucal, it will never go away and she will never be cancer free.

The treatment will hopefully reduce her symptoms enough so she can go back to as normal of a life as possible but unfortunately gliomas like to grow back within the first year in the exact same place. While moving to another part of her brain is rare, it can still happen but gliomas like big smart brains apparently and not other organs. However, Dr. Eaton and all of those who love her, are hoping to prove the doctors wrong and NOT have the tumor grow back at all!

As of now, Kristen has had to withdraw from nursing school, take time off of work, and she is unable to drive. Eventually she will work herself up to doing all those things again, but she is taking it day by day for now. Her treatments will begin Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Emory. They will have to travel from Thomaston to Atlanta five days a week for 6-8 weeks.

We ask that you help us by donating towards medical bills, travel expenses, and supplement her loss of income. Anything at all will be greatly appreciated, as well as your continued thoughts, prayers and good vibes as they start the trivial process of kicking cancer!
