Katherine's Exchange to CROATIA

I just wanted to let you know what has been going on recently, most of it pertaining to going on foreign exchange. I'm reaching the end of my freshman year at WIlliams High School, which is going well. The past few months, I have been looking at going on exchange during junior year for roughly eleven months. The process to do this would begin in May of this year, and would include interviews, meetings, and a lot of paperwork. I am currently looking at Spain as my top choice, but my other four choices are the Czech Republic, Chile, Argentina, and Japan, although it isn't guaranteed that I will end up in any of these countries.
I would really like to do this because of the doors it could open up. North Carolina isn't much of a cultural mixing pot, and for a few years now I have thought about using my gap year between high school and college to travel, however this opportunity is more cost effective and would make it possible to go on exchange twice, once in junior year and once during the gap year. Also, I would like one huge thing to put on college applications. I feel like the fact that I studied in a foreign country for a school year would make me more desirable to colleges.
The cost for the year would include visa, passport, emergency fund, spending money, language camps, and travel. I am planning on earning as much as possible of this through babysitting, yard sales, and the website gofundme. However, I would greatly appreciate any donations toward this, which could be in lieu of birthday or Christmas presents. If you have any questions about the program or where I'm planning to go with it, just shoot me an email!
Love,

Katherine

Countdown to Croatia! Just a few weeks away! Katherine is squeezing in Driver's Ed this week and the driving part next week so she could try for her permit before she leaves. She won't be driving while she is in Croatia but she wants to be ahead of the game. She is also picking up odd jobs - babysitting, pet sitting, house sitting - to earn some spending money for when she goes abroad. Thank you so much for all the support so far. Make sure to watch her progress on her blog www.katherineincroatia.wordpress.com

Katherine's birthday is tomorrow. She turns 15! My 15 year old will be going half way across the world in just three months. For those who ask, "Yes, I am scared and, yes, I will probably cry like a baby when she leaves" but deep inside I know this will be such an incredible journey for her. She has been in touch with her host family and we are in touch with the travel agency and the Rotary Exchange in Croatia. The family seems very nice - 21 year old daughter, 17 year old daughter (as of yesterday) who is going on exchange to Montreal, and an 11 year old son. The grandparents also live in a flat next to them. She will be going to the High School of Hotel and Tourism which should be very interesting. Now she is spending time being a typical teenager - sleepover and pool time with friends today and movies tonight with another friend. Tomorrow is family night! If you would like to keep updated on her progress (and I know she would appreciate it) follow her blog www.katherineincroatia.wordpress.com. If you would like to give a gift for her birthday, money towards her trip would be most appreciated. Thank you!

Best way to update everyone is to check out Katherine's blog at http://katherineincroatia.wordpress.com. It pretty much says it all. Things are moving at a fast pace now. We are forever grateful for the outpouring of help. We had a successful church fundraiser, a successful yard sale and we have one more coming up.

Thank you so much for the donations and outpouring of help - from offers to help with yards sales to picking up Croatian dictionaries - it is all appreciated! Donations so far have helped pay for passports, travel agency fees, and the Rotary Blazer. We also have some set aside for the insurance and we need to raise for the flight costs.

We are in the process of planning a large fundraiser and Katherine is always looking for employment. She is thinking of summer jobs. If anyone knows of summer jobs that would hire responsible 15 year olds, that would be appreciated. Thanks so much to our local Rotary, Alamance Rotary Club. Katie Dukeshire, President-Elect has taken on a huge task in helping us navigate this process and Tanya Feagins, the District 7690 Rotary Youth Exchange Coordinator, has been a huge help from the beginning. Without her, we would be lost.
