"THE GREATEST CITY IN AMERICA" Especially here in Historic Fells Point Waterfront in Downtown Baltimore! This historic waterfront along Harris Creek on George Street (A.K.A. Thames St.) in Fells Point is where my Ancestors have led me to discover and start King George's Landing .

Record Visitation and Spending

According to Longwoods International, Baltimore welcomed 24.5 million domestic visitors in calendar year 2014, who spent a record $5.2 billion at the rate of $10,000 per minute – up 3.7 percent over 2013. Visitor spending contributed $649 million in state and local taxes, the equivalent tax savings of $630 per Baltimore household. The influx of visitors also helped expand the workforce to 82,379 jobs, reflecting 7.4 percent of total area employment worth $2.7 billion in personal income.

Meetings Mean Business to Baltimore

Despite the unrest in April, 2015 remained a record year for citywide conventions as the city welcomed 30 groups to Baltimore that calendar year. In fiscal year 2015, Visit Baltimore booked a total of 398 events for future years, generating 424,115 future hotel room nights with an economic impact of more than $263 million. Short-term demand remained strong with 52 percent of this year’s room nights actualizing in calendar years 2015-2017.

"Everyone — New York, Miami, Norfolk, Boston — wants tall ships. It's very competitive and the best man wins," said Nan Nawrocki, president of the nonprofit Sail Baltimore, sponsor of Wednesday's get-acquainted tour. "There are a number of ships we're interested in, and we hope to have 10 or more lined up by the time we're done."

Last June, the group was successful in bringing more than three dozen ships to Sailabration, the kickoff of the war commemoration. The ships, in turn, attracted 1.5 million people — some 435,000 from out of state — that generated $166 million in economic impact in the metropolitan area, the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission reported.

Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and an important seaport on the wide estuary of the Patapsco River. The Chesapeake Bay. With several famous universities, in particular the Johns Hopkins University, museums and a renowned symphony orchestra, Baltimore is a major east coast cultural center. It was the birthplace of Edgar Allan Poe, Billy Holliday and The Great Frederick Douglass & Issac Myers.

History

The settlement of Baltimore was established in 1729 and named after the Barons Baltimore, founders of the colony of Maryland. Commerce and shipping brought it prosperity, and in 1796 it was granted its municipal charter. Its place in American history was won in 1814, when British forces bombarded Fort Mc Henry for 25 hours without bringing about its surrender. The sight of the American flag still flying over the fort on the morning after the bombardment inspired Francis Scott Key's poem "The Star Spangled Banner", which became the text of the national anthem.
