8/25/2014 Adam Joseph Barney, 23, confessed to killing my almost 15 month old niece Kenzie Rose LaBuy who was left in his care by her mother Kaci Lynn Autumn Rupert (Cook). Adam had 2 warrants out at the time of the murder. Kaci took off with Kenzie and her brothers on 5/31 and had been hiding from my brother and not allowing him to see his daughter, even after multiple requests, and all the while we have been seeking to get custody of Kenzie. My brother had done everything asked of him, including a parenting class of his own recognizance, filing parentage paperwork with the UT courts, and putting Kenzie on his insurance at his new job all in hopes of getting the only thing that mattered in his life, his daughter. Adam is in custody, but I feel Kaci is just as guilty, just because a woman can have a child does not mean she is the superior parent. Kaci didn't even have the common decency to call my brother and let him know that his daughter had been killed, it was left to the police who contacted him 24 hours after the incident. Friends of my brother and Kaci have all said that my brother was the better parent, you could see the bond they had and he loved her more than words can describe. If you search for video of the news you can see how emotionless Kaci is, I understand there is the shock value of such as tragedy, but she seems almost careless in the video like it's no big deal. Adam & Kaci have taken away the only person to truly hold my brother's heart and make him want to be a better person, his little girl! Kenzie is loved and missed by a father, grandmother, aunt, and uncle who will never get to see the amazing woman we know she would have grown up to be.
Right now we are seeking funds for: Travel & Funeral Expenses, Legal Fees, and any left over funds will be donated to Missing and Exploted Children and if possible we would like to set up a trust that would help others in similar situations. The system failed a 14 month little girl and her father who had been activily persuing custody of his daughter, he was doing everything police, DCFS, and lawyers told him to do in order to get his daughter back and they failed in protecting her. We will update more as information becomes available and appreciate even the smallest of donations.
