Joy Moja: Education in Tanzania

Donation protected
Joy Moja is a socially conscious retailer selling quality handmade products to provide educational opportunities in Tanzania.

Christina Joy is the founder of and visionary behind Joy Moja. While attending the University of Dar Es Salaam and traveling throughout Tanzania in 2012, Christina was struck by the lack of educational opportunities for Tanzanian children. She recognized a great need and a great opportunity to strengthen Tanzania’s future by supporting its children.

In 2014, Christina founded Joy Moja, an organization that sells beautiful beaded sandals, handbags, paintings, and jewelry created by Tanzanian artisans in order to sponsor various projects aimed at providing greater educational opportunities to Tanzanian children. With the help of countless people and generous donations, Christina traveled back to Tanzania, established business relationships with Tanzanian market women and various artisans, imported a small inventory of artisan products, visited with schools in dire need of assistance, and donated hundreds of school supplies. She sold her fares at trunk shows and festivals, conducted book drives, and used proceeds to send supplies to Tanzania and purchase more inventory.

As Joy Moja continued to grow, Christina knew she was going to need more help. She partnered with web designers, launched JoyMoja.com and social media sites through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. She hired an accountant, formed a board, and obtained charity status by Spring of 2015.

By the end of 2015, Joy Moja plans to connect with additional schools, put thousands of donated books into the hands of Tanzanian children, initiate new programs to support educational growth in schools in Tanzania, and fund essential school needs (including bookshelves, bathrooms, desks, and standard school supplies). Joy Moja also plans to launch their artisan products online so that consumers can purchase quality handmade Tanzanian products and support children’s educations at the same time. Your tax deductible donation will help meet these needs and build inventory so that Joy Moja can become a self-sustaining charity organization by 2016.
