Reconstructing Joseph Smith Genome

I have a PhD in Genetics and Biomolecular Sciences from the University of Pavia, Italy and I have been working on the DNA of the Joseph Smith Jr. family as a side project off and on for nearly 15 years. This information has been used for genealogical and historical purposes in order to answer questions pertaining to his ancestry and posterity. I have published my results in articles that are available on the site http://www.JosephSmithDNA.com. At that time I had resources available through the laboratory I was working for, but I am now an independent researcher with my own consulting company ( http://www.GeneticGenealogyConsultant.com). My objective is to test a limited, but carefully selected number of living descendants of Joseph Smith Jr., founder of the Mormon movement, utilizing new technologies that have become available over the past few years. The results of these tests will be used to reconstruct a more detailed genetic profile of Joseph Smith based on autosomal DNA.  I hope to use this information to address more complex alleged paternity cases that have been historically linked to Joseph Smith, as well as adding a genomic dimension by compiling his genetic profile, which was previously only partially available. The company that I will use is 23andMe ( http://www.23andMe.com) and each test will cost $99 plus S&H. I will use their services because over the years I feel like they have been the most consistent with the quality of data and analysis tools available. If you would like to help with this project, please donate something to it. Thank you. Dr. Ugo A. Perego

The research paper (preview edition) is available here:

We made a few minor corrections to the proofs and that should be reflected in the final version soon both online and on print. It appears that we have been able to secure the open access option at a discounted rate thanks to a special agreement already in existence between the journal Forensic Science International: Genetics and our university. Let’s keep our fingers crossed! Thank you all for your help! Btw, a special thanks to all the donors was included in the acknowledgments.

This is just one of several projects I have been working on with regards to the DNA of the posterity and ancestry of Joseph SmithJr.

Regular donations will help with future research work.

Good news! After nearly two years in the works, we were finally able to complete the writing and additional analysis for the article on the case study involving the possible paternity of Josephine Lyon and whether she was the daughter of Windsor Lyon or Joseph Smith Jr. that was first presented at the Mormon History Association conference in 2016 (see www.JosephSmithDNA.com). The final draft was submitted earlier this year in a scientific, peer-reviewed journal. It received some very valuable feedback from the reviewers and our team complied with their requests and resubmitted the article last month. Over the weekend we received news that it was accepted for publication and it is now in the production stage. I will have details about where and when it will be available in another update as soon as production is finalized and a publication date is available. However, here is a decision that needs to be made soon. Many scientific journals place their articles behind a paywall. Individuals interested in accessing them (including our work on Joseph Smith Jr. and Josephine Lyon's DNA) must either go to a university library or pay a fee. However, scientific journals have the option to make these articles OPEN ACCESS, if the authors are willing to pay upfront a fee (an expensive one unfortunately) that will replace the journal missed revenue from individual downloads. Those of you that have published in peer-reviewed journals or that access them frequently probably know what I am talking about. As an independent researcher, I do not have access to all the funds to make this article OPEN ACCESS. Therefore, I am turning the question and the opportunity to make it available to everyone for free to those that have funded this project from its beginning or to others interested in this type of work. Should we try to make this article OPEN ACCESS, or should we leave it behind a paywall? If we want it OPEN ACCESS, are you willing to contribute to make it happen? The total fee is in excess of $3000, but I think I can find the balance elsewhere. The choice is yours! Thank you for your support on this project and feel free to send me a personal message asking for additional details. (Please note that the PREVIOUS amount raised of $8,705 at the time of this update was used to pay for data collection, production and analysis. This is essentially a continuation of the previous GOFUNDME campaign with the sole focus of raising the funds necessary to make the finished article available for free online).

Hello everyone. Here is another update. The scientific version of the paper on Joseph Smith/Josephine is near completion and I hope to have it ready for submission some time in November. We just ran a few more analysis to strengthen our conclusions. I am also continuing data collection and analysis with regard to the paternal and maternal origin of JS through the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA respectively.

In the meantime, if you'd like to hear about my DNA work regarding Joseph Smith's offspring (including Josephine's paternity case) and other projects, here is a podcast that was posted online yesterday: http://www.ldsperspectives.com/2016/10/26/dna-detective-work-ugo-perego

Please share this project. Thanks.

Excited about presenting tomorrow afternoon at the 14th Italian Federation of Life Sciences on my work on Joseph Smith DNA. Also, I am making progresses with two publications, one for a humanities and one for a science journal. The next step is to work on some more genetic ancestry using the Y chromosome and mirochondrial DNA I have reconstructed for JS as well as assembling his nuclear DNA profile. Donations are still welcome and very much appreciated for this project as I am working as an independent researcher on it. Thank you!

Sorry, it's the first link included in Update 1 that does not work. The second link under the "I have a PhD" does work.

The link www.JosephSmithDNA.com. above doesn't work, and I think it's because of the period at the end that is connected to the link. Wanted to let people know it does work if you type it in your search bar without that period at the end.

In an email you sent me earlier in the year you wrote that you are "working two separate articles that are taken from my 2017 Fairmormon presentation. The first one focuses on the title of my presentation, What does the Church believe about evolution? and the second one talks about updates on the Book of Mormon and DNA Studies gospel topic essay, which I helped in compiling." Is it possible to know when these presentations will be available? Will they go on your website?
