After a three-year journey and becoming a lay minister in the Congregational Church, our friend Jerry has been diagnosed with a Diffused Large B Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL). DLBCL is a blood cancer which attacks the white blood cells. Four short weeks after fulfilling his studies and joyfully beginning his calling as a minister, Jerry’s Lymphoma presented itself as a tumor at the base of his tongue. While our friend, vocalist, minister, and longtime member and leader of the Faith Community Church was busy seeing doctors and having tests done, he began having trouble breathing, swallowing, and speaking. Within hours, Jerry was rushed to surgery to open his airway with a tracheotomy and then a feeding tube.
Our kind and gentle friend now has a battle ahead of him.
The wonderful news is doctors have concluded this is a winnable battle! Jerry will begin chemotherapy in the next few days and has been assured the treatment will shrink his tumor and very likely cure him of his Lymphoma!
The difficult reality is that there are so many expenses involved in fighting this battle. Jerry will have to not only put his ministering on hold while going through treatment but will not be able to work his part time job which supplemented his and Eileen’s income. Because Jerry will be able to fight this battle so quickly and thoroughly, he does not qualify for benefits you would think would be included in his Medicare benefits, such as nutritional supplements.
So… this is where we come in my dear friends and family! Our friend Jerry and his beautiful wife Eileen need our help. They already know they will be charged a $5,000 copay for Jerry’s treatment and it hasn’t even started. Surgery to open Jerry’s airway was unexpected. The supplements are very expensive. The list of expenses is very long. Anyone who knows a family living on a fixed income, these expenses to save our friend will be financially devastating.
