Help Janeya study abroad in France

Donation protected
My name is Janeya. I am a Junior at Depauw University, studying Women’s-Gender Sexuality and Computer Science. My majors have enabled me to think critically about gender relationships. My interest in learning French along with my passion for women studies caused me to choose France as my study abroad destination. I have a strong interest in the women's experience in France particularly because many of the feminist theorist and activist I have learned about, lived in France. Through this program, I will experience a great amount of time to get familiar with the language and still learn about moments of women's history that influenced French culture today. I hope to gain a level of fluency in the French language and a more wholesome understanding of the history especially as it pertains to women. Staying with a Nicois family will impact my experience on a more personal level. My host family (next image) will be a closer engagement with the language while exploring my many interests concerning women’s ability to influence the spaces around them.

A host family will help me establish lifelong connections in France; which would be a privilege of pursuing an immersive college education.

Unfortunately the agencies of the scholarships I applied for notified me a month before the departure date (06-01-2018) with the news that I was not chosen to have my trip funded. The departure date is near, and I worry that lacking the funds to travel will prevent me from seeing France and finally meeting my host Family.

More about me:

I have been directly impacted by gun violence; from living in and going to school in neighborhoods with high crime rates. I have witnessed the pain among the perpetrators and victims of senseless murder.  I want to use my leadership, to potentially influence policy and change laws that impact the lives of inner-city youth.

Here are some photos from the March that means so much to me and students in Chicago:

2016 Peace March

I see law school in my future.  I have been vocal about gun violence, and hope to one day be able to influence policy. During my sophomore year of high school, I started the I am For Peace movement,  a dynamic student-led initiative that seeks to spread awareness and decrease the amount of violent activity in Chicago. To date, this has become an ongoing initiative with supporters that include the Mayor of Chicago, several other leaders from Chicago to Durban, South Africa, and special recognition from former Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. While I will be a life-long participant in the growing impact of my peace initiative, Women's rights in America and abroad has become one of my growing concerns as a Black, female college student. I want to study abroad to have a strong understanding of the international discourse on women's rights politically, socially, and economically.
