Jamie's Critical Spinal Cord Injury

On December 1st, 2016, Jamie Feuer’s vehicle was rear-ended while stopped at a freeway on-ramp light in San Clemente. The violent accident broke her neck and severed her spinal cord. Because her spinal cord was severed near the top of her cervical spine (at the C3 vertebrae), Jamie is paralyzed from the neck down. She currently cannot breathe without the use of a ventilator.
She is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Vibra Hospital in San Diego, and has just become stable enough to start the long process of weening off the ventilator so that she may eventually breathe on her own again.
You'd think insurance would cover everything for a person in Jamie's situation, but that is simply not the case. While most of the costs incurred in the hospital will be covered, long term care in an assisted living facility is NOT covered. This is a problem because Jamie will most certainly need long term care. In fact, she will need care 24 hours a day for the remainder of her life. This is not a role that can be filled by a family member. Quadriplegics need round-the-clock care by medical professionals to do everything from suctioning the fluid in her lungs to caring for her catheter and feeding tube. She will also require expensive equipment that needs frequent maintenance.
Just a month ago, Jamie was very active, going to the gym nearly every day. Now, the simplest tasks from brushing her teeth to bathing herself, or simply scratching an itch are impossible for her to do on her own.
