Jacie's Recovery

$13,192 of $12,000 goal

Even working non stop towards my goals I have found a lack of resources and wall of financial struggles. So I am asking for help. I am a transgender woman who was beaten so badly after coming out in 2014 to friends and family by coworkers that I suffered fractures in my skull, a shattered eye socket, and two breaks in my nose. Attached below is a link to my story.  A  Bustle Documentary about what happened to me and my speech I gave at The Women's March. These injuries have left me with long-term effects. Including severe allergies and a collapsed septum that requires surgery to allow me to breathe properly again. I am raising money to repair my nose and have a medical procedure that will allow me to stop taking medications. Since the incident, I have moved north and began a new life. One driven by positivity and the drive to accomplish everything that I can along the way. I have taken up running and become a pretty skilled Transgender Athlete. I just ran my first 26.2 mile marathon and have now set my sights on an Ultra Marathon.  As a distance runner, I struggle with limitations set by my breathing. But that does not stop me! However, it would be a great improvement to be able to breathe properly during events or even training. Aside from working two jobs to cover the cost of living and medical expenses related to my condition I also volunteer free time to work with LGBTQ people in need and speak to groups raising awareness of Transgender Women and the violence we face. My life changed so much on December 21st, 2014. It took me a year to realize all of the change and all of the work ahead of us. I am asking for your help to be able to accomplish my goals in life and continue the work I do for the community as a whole and happy woman. With all of the same advantages as everybody else.  If I can raise even a fraction of my goal. I know that my hard work and dedication will allow me to raise the rest. Any donations I receive will help me to rebuild my life and help others. Even if you can not donate sharing increases my chances of reaching my goal and helps me to get this information out there that may help change discrimination laws and save lives. Please share and retweet keep this moving.  Thank you so much for all the help and support you have shown me. https://www.bustle.com/articles/200589-3-trans-women-share-their-horrific-struggles-to-find-safe-supportive-workplaces "I did this documentary with Bustle Magazine last year." https://youtu.be/PdaYZKcWEDo "My Speech at The Women's March." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/charlize-veritas/the-dangers-of-being-transgender----the-attack-on-jacie-leopold_b_9173816.html

I just left the plastic surgeons office. He is sending me to an ear nose and throat specialist. He can fix my septum and airway. He said the bones broken in my face are pressing into my sinus cavity as well. That is why my sinuses are inflamed and touching the back of my septum. It's going to likely take two surgeries at the same time to repair.

I'm staying positive, now I'm waiting for the ear nose and throat appointment. While he puts together his surgery plan and looks at the CT scan.

Updates will continue here before, during and after surgery. This will also be left open with no updated goal. Time lost from work was never figured into the original goal. If any more donations are made they will be used for recovery time at home anything past that will be used to help others in need. Thank you all so much for this gift that you have given me.

The impact this has had on me will be shining through in everything I do going forward. What I went through is unacceptable and we have the power to unite and put a stop to it. If you are reading this and going through a hard time or have experienced violence or loss. You are more than your experience. Your value does not decrease because of someone else's inability to see your worth. You are loved. You are stronger than those that hurt you. Thank you!

I am almost in total disbelief right now. We met the goal the last night and still I am receiving donations and support. I sat up most of last night in tears. There was support from some very large community members right at the very end.

I am leaving this open, I have no idea where it may go. If it continues to receive donations you can bet I will invest it towards making safe spaces for transgender people and minorities.

You have shown me the true power of community and today I have a much deeper understanding of the word gratitude. The Arkansas justice system failed me but you all stepped right up in their place. For that, I am truly humbled. Thank you all so much!

We have almost reached the goal! I am so overwhelmed by all of the compassion and support you have all shown me. You are the center of my recovery. Every share on Facebook Twitter or where ever you have shared. You are doing this. Without your help and support I would not have this emense opportunity to get the treatment I should have had when this happened.

I would love to one day be able to put an end to all Anti-Transgender violence. Maybe this campaign is starting that ripple into the world. Each time one of you clicks on it and reads my story. Know that this is not only my story. This is the story of so many Transgender Women and Non Binary Fems. I was lucky enough to survive my attack where so many others did not and that has given me great appreciation for life. It inspired me to respect each day and live my life to the fullest. That sparked my fitness and health journey. Now because of this community I may one day be able to give my best and breathe at 100% while I am running and training. My biggest hopes are that this corrects the embarassing sinus problems I have had since they crushed my face. I can not thank you all enough for this!

I go back to the surgeon February 14th. I will be posting updates.
