John Lee Hooker Portrait Sculpture

Donation protected
Blues Artist John Lee Hooker would have been 100 years old on August 22, 2017.

Please join me in my effort to give an original larger than life, portrait sculpture of John Lee Hooker created by myself, to the Delta Blues Museum on the occasion of his 100th Birthday!

My name is Scott Cawood and I am a metal sculptor who is seeking funding to allow me to create an original John Lee Hooker portrait sculpture and donate it to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale MS, his home town, in the name of Blues Lovers Everywhere.

In June of 2015 my exhibit "Blues Portraits In Steel" opened at the Delta Blues Museum. The exhibit was scheduled to run through Oct 2015 but has been extended indefinitely thanks to the popularity of the sculptures and the fact that I truly love having them be a part of the DBM experience. The Delta bluesmen portraits I have created so far are: Bukka White, Furry Lewis, Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Howlin' Wolf and Skip James (see below).

And now I want to create a portrait sculpture of one of my all time favorites, John Lee Hooker and donate it to this award winning, little jewel of a museum located deep in the Mississippi Delta. But I need your help.

About the work:
Each portrait sculpture is a little larger than lifesize and created from repurposed steel, specifically, used derelict heating oil tanks, cut into small sections and each welded over a subframe of 1/4" steel rod to form the basic structure.  Each section is then hand shaped and  fitted into place & then welded  together.
The patina is created by a burnt oil finish process which is very similar to seasoning a cast iron frying pan.
Each sculpture is a one-off, original piece of art and the only one in exisitence. By appearance they look like cast bronze but they are not, they are made by the extreme manipulation of used steel. The pitted texture of the weathered steel very closely resembles the texture of human skin. See below a typical derelict heating oil tank I use to create these sculptures.

The resurrection and transformation of scrap steel into the portrait sculptures of the these artists, for me, is a vital componet of their larger presence.
Each one is made of heavy gauge steel & built quite solidly. I will be posting plenty of "In Progress" updates along the way with photos & hopefully some video too.

***The Plan:
My goal is raise $4000 total....
-That includes $3500 for me to create the the sculpture in my studio. These portraits typically take me about 3 months to complete.
-And $500 for me to personally deliver and present it to the Delta Blues Museum. My studio is located in Antietam MD & the Museum is in Clarksdale MS.

I hope to recieve funding as I go and if robust enough, to be able to just create it start to finish, without too many other distractions.

I want everyone who particpates to plan on coming to the DBM to help me present the piece to the museum. I want you to be a part of it this. And then we can go swill a few ice cold beers afterwards.
I'm shooting for Aug 22, 2017 date or thereabouts, hopefully funding will facilitate that time frame but we'll have to see how it goes. However I don't see it going later than Oct. I'll know more as we go & keep everyone updated.

***As an added incentive, for each donation of $110 or larger, I will send you a "Mississippi Delta Blues Bird". These are small original sculptures I create from found and repurposed steel and these in particular are colored as "Blues Birds" specificlly for this project and can only be obtained by a donation of $110 or more.

The Delta Blues Museum does an incredible job telling the Delta Blues story but equally as important, I feel, is  they also serve as the community's cultural heart by keeping the local Delta Blues Culture alive and well and relevant. They are a hands on, interactive bridge that spans the gap and maintains the connection to grow & strengthen the all important bonds that tie culture to community. It's a small museum that does a big job with very limited rescources.

I have been a professional artist and sculptor for nearly 30 years now and I have never experienced such a warm and heartfelt reception of my work as I have recieved at the DBM from the people of Clarksdale. The connection formed between the community and my Art work is the most genuine and deeply heartfelt I've ever had the privledge to experience.

And so I am hoping you will see your way to join me in my efforts to continue to Support this 'difference making' institution as well as to Thank them for all they do to keep the Delta Blues alive and well and for all of us to Celebrate one of America's truly great original artists by presenting the Delta Blues Museum with a portrait sculpture of Clarksdale's native son....

Remember if you Donate $110 (the $10 is for pkg & sh) and get your original "Mississippi Delta Blues Bird" as a reward and then you can go visit John Lee yourself with the knowledge that you had a big part of him being there. You will not be disappointed... that's my promise.

Above....A quick preliminary clay sketch of John Lee Hooker. This is just a rough sketch. The steel sculpture will be much different. He'll be older and showing more milage.  I'm looking towards a countenance more closely resembling the image of him directly below.

Yeah now that's what I'm talking about! That's the expression of his I really want to capture....or close to it. It's the visual equivalent of the feeling I get from his music.
