As most of you know, my brother, Chris Giffin, passed away two years ago from complications due to diabetes. That's him 2nd from right kneeling down in front.
Chris had to deal with Type 1 Diabetes from the age of 8. Every day he had to test his levels and give himself a shot. And anyone who spent time with the Giffin Family could always count on a candy bar or two or three sitting in the refrigerator. Part of Chris' gusto for life was due to his experiences as a camper and counselor at Camp Joslin at The Barton Center, a resident camp for boys with juvenile diabetes . While attending camp there, Chris learned how to deal with diabetes through their educational programs. "The focus of our programs is fun and support; the goal is to educate children and their families on how to manage the daily rigors of diabetes, so they can live fuller and healthier lives." (The Barton Center) His days at Camp Joslin were always an important and fond memory to Chris.
I would like to honor Chris by sponsoring a child in need who might not be able to afford the cost of attending Camp Joslin. There are so many children who are dealing with juvenile diabetes who would benefit greatly from their time at Camp Joslin, but they just don't have the means. Chris was always so generous and in his memory I would like us to be generous too by helping a child have the same wonderful experiences that Chris had at Camp Joslin. Chris learned to face this adversity head on and I truly believe that it was his time spent at camp that helped Chris live with diabetes as long as he did. Wouldn't it be great to give the knowledge and skills to a young boy with juvenile diabetes so he, too, could live a long prosperous life? The camp already has a (vetted) waiting list for children in need, and I will be sure these funds are used for the purposes stated herein.
I hope to raise enough funds to send a camper for one week which is $1,375.00. A two week session is $2,585 and a full 3 week session is $4,095.00.
