Hike For Humanity

First, I want to thank you for taking the time and showing interest in my campaign. You're awesome and I'm not just saying that. Time is a limited commodity and I'm blessed you chose to spend some of yours on me.
My name is Dorian Santiago. I am a writer, director, acting coach, humanitarian, and a student of life.
I recently received a calling to walk to Los Angeles. Although I currently reside just outside of Atlanta, I will be making this walk from Chicago (because I want to see my 90 year-old grandmother before I go since I'll miss her birthday due to the hike).
I am walking for a couple of reasons:
1. I want to be an example for my students that if you want to succeed, you have to go the extra mile (or 2450).
Artists need to take greater action because what we do is not viewed as useful or sensible. So I'm taking that action, massive action to provide an example to my students. They need to know that they will have to go above and beyond to succeed.
2. I want to create greater attention for the arts in our schools. We are losing the gift of the arts by cutting their budgets and focusing more on athletics and technology.
Dreams (of artists) are often ridiculed, devalued, and crushed because they are not seen as practical. What is more practical than humanity? Humanity is the human spirit, the connection between each other. Show me a sport where you don't have a competitor (a connection to another human). Show me technology that doesn't have a connection to humanity.
I have been told criticism is a call to action. My criticism is leading me to act.
3. I want to have a screenplay, which I've written, produced. It is moving, timely, and displays the change we need to create in ourselves in order to embrace our differences, connect on a basic human level and coexist.
I believe films are powerful. They can challenge our thinking, open our minds, and unite us as humans. For a brief moment in a theater, we become equals (unless your phone goes off - then you're beneath everyone). We relate to the characters and are allowed to feel without being judged.
The money I raise will be used to purchase the following gear (which needs to last me at least three months)
-Backpack
-Tent
-Sleeping bag
-Boots
-Food, water, and other basic provisions
It will also help my family ship items to me along the way, as I won't be able to carry a three-month supply of food with me.
I have already sold some of my belongings and have raised $1000 in doing so.
Though I am walking alone, I know that we do not succeed in life without the help of others. So I can only accomplish my goal in getting there with your generosity.
This is just a stepping stone to even greater projects I will establish later, for I know that I am here to serve others and leave this earth better than when I arrived.
