Herb Varley's 1st term expenses

Donation protected
[UPDATE: There has been tremendous response in the first 24 hours of this campaign. We have raised the goal to include living expenses as well as tuition for the first term.]

Herb Varley, Nuu-chah-nulth and Nisga'a, is a longtime Downtown Eastside, Vancouver community member, activist, organizer, writer, and beloved friend to many. Herb's commitment to social justice has led him to support numerous calls to action in the Downtown Eastside and beyond. He has been involved with housing justice groups, social justice theatre, Indigenous activism, community newspapers, and civic politics.

The program
In September 2016, Herb starts university as one of twelve students in Simon Fraser University's Aboriginal University Prep Program located at SFU Surrey campus. This program offers a full year of university-level courses to Indigenous students from all over Canada. The coursework is designed to focus on Indigenous history, politics, culture, and current issues. It also provides strong foundations in writing, analysis, critical thinking, and mathematics.

After completing the Aboriginal University Prep program, Herb will gain automatic admission to Simon Fraser University as an undergraduate, and his coursework will transfer over and count for many of his pre-requisites. As a regular undergraduate, Herb will qualify for scholarships and grants available to all students and Indigenous students.

Call for community support
Herb has about 30 days to gather together funds for his year at the Aboriginal University Prep program. A group of Herb's friends have put together this site and ask you to donate whatever you can to support Herb's educational goals.

The money raised here will go directly towards paying Herb's tuition, student fees and living expenses.
