Helping animal rescues in Puerto Rico

Donation protected
At the end of May 2014, I will be travelling to the island of Puerto Rico for a Graduate School course. While there, our complement of 6 students and our professor will be visiting several rescues and shelters to study  the circumstances leading to animal homelessness and to offer assistance where we can.

'Sato' is a Puerto Rican slang term for a mixed breed dog. Puerto Rico is dealing with horrific pet overpopulation, abandonment, abuse, and neglect. With estimates numbering in the hundreds of thousands on the small island, these dogs are often viewed as a public menace and health hazard and, as a result, become victims of abuse such as burning and drowning, are killed or injured by cars or are dumped like trash on local beaches. If they do end up in a shelter, the euthanasia rate is approximately 99% (Source: Pets Alive Puerto Rico website).  Because of economic, social, and cultural factors, abandoned Satos can be found struggling to survive on local beaches and streets, once somebody's pet - now an unwanted pest. Several volunteer rescues have stepped forward to help them: The Sato Project, Pets Alive Puerto Rico, El Faro de los Animales, Save a Sato, All Sato Rescue and many others. Their work seems endless as they provide food, medical attention and low-cost spay-neuter programs, working to save them from a horrible fate in places like 'Dead Dog Beach' and to find some of them loving homes elsewhere in the USA.

The rescues are in need of collars and leashes (can be gently used), Kuranda beds, treats, crates and toys. Some of these items are transportable - I can bring them in my luggage; others would have to be purchased there. If you can help with a donation of new or gently-used goods, please email me at [email redacted].  If you prefer to donate money, which will be distributed among several rescues and used to purchase much-needed supplies, please donate to my GoFundMe campaign. Even a $10 donation can do a great deal of good.  I will be keeping a photo log of the trip and updating my facebook page with stories which will be available to be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/HABinform?ref=hl

If you have a specific request, please don't hesitate to contact me to direct your funds accordingly (ie. if you want your donation to be used for something specific-I'll do my best).  There is also  a short wish-list for specific, more-costly items that would have to be purchased there.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
