Hunter's Medical Fund

Donation protected

On May 14th, 2013, Hunter Martin Peters was born  to our niece, Jen, and her husband, Jeff.  Hunter's struggles began immediately upon birth as it was discovered that he had a number of physical issues.  He and his parents have been addressing his medical issues since his birth and continue to battle with them to this day.

The goal of this gofundme page is to help Hunter and his family with the mountain of medical bills that have accumulated due to the issues he has had and the challenges he will continue to have. There has been a tremendous amount of medical care so far including surgeries, physical therapy, occupational therapy, numerous specialists, hospitals, ICU, etc., and that is just the beginning.  Hunter will continue to require a lot of special care as he grows up.

Up to this point in his life, Hunter has not been able to walk  without the help of his racy gold walker (see picture above... Hunter is dressed up for Halloween as the little old man from the movie Up!).  It is our hope that through the love, prayers, warm wishes, and the generosity of those who read this page, that Hunter will one day be able to walk on his own.

With all that Hunter has been through, he is still the most beautiful, animated, upbeat, fun-loving, and amazing little person you will ever meet.   He has a beautiful smile, a wonderful personality, and the most determined spirt;  he never fails to light up a room and make everyone smile.  He is an incredibly special young man!

Please scroll down through this pictoral timeline of Hunter's life to learn more about what he has been through these past three years.

Hunter was born with extensive physical issues that kept him in ICU for quite some time as a newborn.   He had trouble breathing and swallowing,  no soft pallet, and complications with his spine. All three of these issues would require surgical intervention.
As a newborn, Hunter had issues with his soft palate and jaw that made it difficult for him to breathe and swallow.  Surgery was required to fix his soft palate and a more extensive procedure was needed to correct his jaw.  The doctors had to break his jawbones and insert spacers (see pictures above) between the bones to extend his jaw.  The spacers had screws that were tightened frequently to extend his jaw forward to allow him to swallow properly.

Hunter was also born with scoliosis which the doctors originally tried to correct by putting him in a body cast for a number of months.  That treatment was ultimately ineffective which led to his most recent surgery on February 17.

Along with the scoliosis, Hunter had extra bone that formed over his spine.  Hunter's left leg was affected as the extra bone started to damage his spine making surgery necessary.  The surgery Hunter underwent on February 17 lasted  9 hours and included cutting away the excess bone on his spine, removing one vertebra and two disks, fusion of two vertebrae, and the removal of two of his ribs.  The doctors also inserted and secured telescoping rods along his spine that will extend as he grows and straighten his spine in the process.  Although his surgery went well,  he continues to have trouble moving  his left leg but he is making progress.  There is a lot of physical and occupational therapy in his future with the hope that he may be able to walk on his own one day.

This was Hunter with Mom right after his last surgery.  Such a trouper! This is Hunter a couple of days after surgery.  Thumbs up Hunter!  Looking good!
